Ok guys i gotta question. I've had MY02 wrx for about 2 months now, it has 134,000 miles on it and it has developed a rattling type noise. I think it is coming from the turbo. This noise only occurs at idle and when engine braking. As soon as throttle is applied this noise goes away. Im thinking something is wrong with the turbo but im not sure. I've checked the exhaust for rattles and loose pieces, but there were no problems there. If anyone has any help i would greatly appreciate it.
try to see if u can follow the noise while u have the hood popped. i see that u have a downpipe. if u have the heatshield on, it might be that. could be the heatshield rubbing on it.

Ok so i fixed the rattle. It was something very simple. After checking all the bolts on the dp and up i went to the top side of the engine bay and checked out the wastegate actuator. The rod end is slightly wore and there was about 2-3mm of play, alowing the wastegate to stay open and rattle back and forth. I adjusted the rod just enough so that the the wastegate would stay closed but not pull on the diaphragm of the the actuator. So needless to say it's fixed right now. The car is also a bit quicker on the bottom end, now that its building boost quicker. So if you've got a high mileage subi, check it out.
My boost is stable, no fluxuations. Since I fixed it, it runs so much better off the bottom. now all of the exhaust is spinning the turbo. Im happier now.
I'm having a very similar problem but i was wondering if i can physically see that the wastegate is open or will i only be able to tell by the actuator arm being loose?
