Angry tumbler valve trouble

Hey Guys,

Just had the TURBOXS stage fourTMI installed and my mechanic had to take off the angle sensor for the tumbler valve. He reinstalled everything and now it the car runs crappy like it is getting way to much fuel and the code 1088 keep popping up. Any advice on what to do to fix this or does anyone know where I can find out what might have happened?

Why did he take it off? I have installed a TXS TMIC on two different cars, and didn't have to do anything like that. In fact, the whole proceedure is a 10 minute job at most. Methinks your mechanic doesn't know what he's doing.

Anyways, those angle sensors are very sensitive things. I'm betting the dealer will have to fix it for you.

Yeah man something is wrong. The TMIC is about a ten minute job, remove two bolts, loosen three screws and if you want to take off the bov remove another two bolts or just remove the hoses and your done. Me also thinks something is wrong.

put the sensor back on...

I have a permanent tumble generator code on my ECU... I have the 1088 and one other one...

'right tumble generator valve stuck open'

'right tumble generator valve low output'

My right TGV is obviously stuck, and I have not touched it since the code was found many many miles prior... The valves do nothing more than recirculate Exhaust gas through to more completely combust it and lower emissions... they lower emissions, that's it... I don't know what effect the sensor would have if removed, but i know when the valve stuck open, there is no real affect (on my car at least) ### its been like this since just after install TXS turboback and not bothered the function of the car at all. I considered letting subaru fix this, until i talked to the subaru mechanic about it and he said to me "a tumble generator what"... that made me a bit too nervous... so i just left well enough alone... the utec stops the CEL light from coming on... and despite scanning the OBD II many times at my dad's place, the 1088 cannot be removed from the ECU... It simply cannot be deleted like other codes can... i don't know why???

Worth noting... Phil (formerly of TXS) and knowledable about WRX's and UTEC said that they removed the TGV's from his car altogether... and that the car ran a little funny sometimes between shifts at 3500 rpm... but that it did not bother the car enough to worry him...

Subaru has never used TGV's before the 02 WRX, does not put them on any other of its models, and are not used on the STi, not sure about the 03/04 WRX's... but all it was used for was to pass low emissions in California... damn you liberals in California... caused just one more thing to go wrong on my car here in OH...

Hope that helps
Ron

AHHH.....quite your whining about cali. if you had to see the air you breath everyday, you'd understand that low emissions stuff. bad because it zaps power like a mad man, but good because you won't have to send you car upgrade money to the doctor to pay for the lung cancer drugs.

This was a stage four turboxs which meant that injectors had to be installed and yes the intake was taken off and the front tumbler motor was removed to clear the wiring harness. After asking the mechanic he said that he did reinstall the motor and replaced the butterflys to the closed position. Unfortunately that is where they are stuck. This means that the car starts and idles but is runing really rich in two cylinders. Obviously this is a bad thing. The real problem is I don't know why the valves are stuck. And like another reply on this post. I talked to the people at subaru and they were like TGV what??? So I am going to let my mechanic take the intake off again if it comes down to that. I just didn't know if anyone else had this problem or if anyone had a diagram to show exactly how the valve functions? This would be helpful to the mechanic and I looked through the subaru tech manual and it really doesn't have any good pics. So anyone that has some it would be helpful. Thanks! Meanwhile I will be getting used to driving my motorcycle again

Not to be a know-it-all but the tumbler valve doesn't recirculate exaust gas. It "tumbles" the air coming in to the intake at idle and low rpm's. The swirl this creates helps idle and low rpm performance and promotes fuel economy. It's in the WRX brochure strait from the dealership.
just my $.02

Ok, thanks for the correction

Have to admit i may have pulled that one out of my ass..

I did honestly have the problem, and can't clear the damn code, but really not exactly sure how the TGV lowered emissions, As i read over my post I realized that was pretty much BS and figured i was completely wrong (after all, how the hell could the valves do that if they are in the intake sides and not the exhaust sides, duh)... But i was busy working and did not have the patience to edit the comment... and of course figured some know-it-all would correct me shortly

Just kidding, not a know it all... props for having the correct info and posting it for the rest of us to be knowledgable too.

delete the tumbler valves.....

cobb has them, along with rallispec too. essentially removes the valve, and most have an area where you can add another set of injectors too.

on a side note....if dude had to touch the TGV's for the install.....he didnt read.

there is a special procedure for setting them up. this is why if you dont know what something does...dont mess with it!

Well, mechanic did some magic and I'm back in buisness. I appreciate everyone's help. Just to let you all know, if you have to take the intake manifold off make sure that the throttle position spring is put back in the right place or it can hold your TGV closed and you will have the same problem that I did. But don't worry as long as you don't get into it very hard then you shouldn't hurt the motor. I'll let you know as soon as I take it up to the dyno though!

Thanks!
