Is this true??

The story behind the grenading cat is a bit more specific in modifications.
A atmospheric BOV, which is the first "bolt-on" most WRX owning kids get first , and stock exhaust is behind the grenading cats.

The WRX comes with a recirculating valve, instead of venting to atmosphere it is redirected back into the intake system. The ECU has already calculated this and will be suppling the extra fuel for the air.

However, if the car has the atmospheric BOV then the air is taken away and the extra gas is left. The gas is then left unburned and is sent to the exhaust system.
The gas is then left in the cats, which over time will melt and shards will get sent into the turbine housing which will equal a very expensive replacement.

Catless turbo-back exhausted WRXs/STis/Legacy GTs won't need to worry about the grenading cat if they are equipped with the atmo-BOV. They just get the cool afterfiring.

Got this off a honda site. I was gonna get a atmospheric bov since I can get it cheap but I wanted to know what I would be getting myself into before I bought it.

this has been covered more often than any other topic.

Let me sum it up:

Turbo back exhaust has NOTHING to do with the grenading cat since that is in the up-pipe that is BEFORE the turbo.

An uppipe is CHEAPER than a BOV, why not buy both?

BOV or not, turn up boost and blow up your up-pipe cat, simple as that.

If the throttle body is closed it doesn't matter where the air goes... it's going into the combustion chamber either way.

The WRX computer is designed to make the car run rich when you first back off the throttle to prevent knock...

Now there are 2 groups on this board, one says
the other says
"Have fun replacing your turbo"

I believe the former is correct.
