Surface area is what matters please remember. For reference, here's the APS cooler:

2015 STi: Still Stock
04 STi, 04 WRX: SOLD

I don't disagree that surface area is important, but if thickness is not why are all the aftermarket TMICs thicker? Volume does matter also.

For reference the core for the SSAC is 20"x7.75"x4" the STI (US 04-07) 18.5"x6.625"x3".

The SSAC is bigger than the STI TMIC although I think the 08+ STI TMIC is larger than the SSAC unit. Anyone with that info?

The thickness allows less resistance to flow (pressure drop) due to the increased volume and the larger surface area cools the intake charge more. Both are important. I just can't tell any surface area difference from pictures I have seen of the ssautochrome and reputable companies (APS, Perrin, ETC.). Both seem huge compared to the stock STi intercooler. If anyone has a side by side of a ssautochrome and a reputable aftermarket intercooler it will help clarify this for me. On they compare to a STi intercooler and it is both thicker and larger.
