overboosting sources?

Hey guys im a newb, just have a few questions. i just bought my wrx its an 02' with 64k whoever had it before me had a MBC on it and to what i understand he got a lil greedy adjusting the boost on the turbo. ive read a couple other threads that seem to be similar to this. when im at WOT in 4th and 5th gear the turbo spools up and down back and forth. is there any source of why this is happening? ( there is no boost controller right now on it, im installing my boost gauge this weekend to check what it's spiking at)

it's fairly normal for it to back off as RPMs increase. It's especially visible in 4th and 5th because you're at those high RPMs longer than, say, racing through first. (Also, wtf are you doing at high RPMs in 5th?)

if you can feel it though and you're not just watching a guage flicker a little bit, there may be something more substantial wrong. Can you describe it more clearly?

its really not at high rpm's that this is occuring. the turbo spools up around 3k rpm as it should. then it backs off just after (around 4k) and tries to spool up again. i can hear and feel it hesitating, it feels more like if i floored the car, let off the gas a lil, then floored it again. (only ive got the gas all the way to floor while it does this)

I see you have a cold air intake and a BOV. Any type of engine management on the car?

nah no EM, atleast not that im aware of. the kid who had the car b4 me must have beat on it but doesnt seem like he did anything to the ECU. the car runs good besides this lil issue. There is a CEL code thats being tricked. how much would it cost for me to get a diagnostic tester to see what codes the car trips?

You could get it pulled free at like an autozone or something. Let's start with the CEL. Running those two mods I listed before without EM can easily cause hesitation and jerkiness. This only happens in higher gears?

Edit: Yeah lemme see that

yeah for the most part its only 4th and 5th gear, i might have felt in in 3rd but dont remember if it has. ill find out on my way home from school tonight. (i have the lovely task of commuting to school). also the car does idle a lil higher than i know it should espcially when the engine is cold in the morning. it was at 1500rpms this morning and backs down to 500rpm after a few minutes (which seems a lil low for an idle to me) its from my knowledge the BOV that does this correct?

The idle issue is correct, Obviously we're both from CT and it's cold right now. Mine idles at 1500 then goes down to 500 once the car has warmed up.

you don't mean 500, you mean 750. But the point is still important.

I'm out in minnesota here for the moment and it got down to about -15 the other day. Started a little slower than normal of course but the idle was like nearly 2000 rpms! I let it idle down to 1500 before I even took off the break.
