You are definately gonna need some sort of engine management, injectors and fuel pump. I have a Stage 2.5 setup and I'm running 90-95% injector duty cycles. So with a bigger turbo, you are gonna max out the injectors....which equals leaning the motor out real bad. Another thing to look at since you are running a bigger turbo is a new top mount intercooler.
I would have to disagree. Its only a slightly bigger turbo. I know a lot of people in my area have upgraded turbos without fuel. I have had my vf 23 for 1000 miles and had nothin, but just to be completely safe i am planning on getting fuel soon. My advice to you would be not to run too high boost.
What's a safe boost level? I was planning on going the Ecuteck route later this spring because of the waether here but is it safe to put the turbo in, run it at a low boost level and remap once the weather turns more favourable?
A VF23 and a VF30 are not the same. The VF30 is substantially bigger. Also, you will not be safe running anything other than the stock turbo on the stock fuel system and engine management. I know, everyone knows somebody's brother's cousin's friend who runs a huge turbo on the stock injectors and runs 10 second 1/4 mile times.
So, I guess it comes down to what you want to do. If you want to run your car with a very high chance of damaging or destroying the engine, go ahead and put the turbo on. After all, I'm sure there are plenty of companies that would be happy to sell you a new engine.
Or, you can do it the safe way... the RIGHT way... and wait until you have upgraded your fuel system. Everyone wants to tell you that if you run the factory boost level you will be fine. They are wrong. Your new turbo might be putting out the same amount of PRESSURE as your stock turbo, but it's producing a lot more AIRFLOW.
And, I would also advise against getting an Ecutek. The UTEC is a much better option.
the only problem is here in Vancouver I need to go through an emmsions test every year. Does Utec allow to flip back to stock mode when I need to run pass the government?
