So its finally happened. Ive been saving money since i was 15. im now 18 and i just bought a beautiful blue 02 wrx. i got to say it definetly was worth the wait, i absolutely love it. alright nowthe question. i jsut purchased an invidia n1 race catback, bellmouth dp, and catless up pipe, and a cobb access port. im wondering where should i go next. i wanna keep it cheap cause ill be leaving for bootcamp and money will be tight after that. i know everyone is gonna say a turbo, but which one? ive been eyeing a vf39 and a 16g
If your leaving for training just save up for now, then you will have more option down the road, plus you will have more time to enjoy what you have done with the car. Thats just my .02 cents and what I would do though.

i just dont get why people thing the 02s have bad transmissions..i have a 160k on my 02 and i definatly dont granny my car. Some people just really dont understand how to properly drive a manual car and i think thats the main problem.
ok ive doen some research and im gonna decide to go with a 16g. Would putting it in myself take much time? and i know i can use a tmic but i rally like the agressive look of a fmic. question is would that make lag noticeably different if i were to go with a fmic? and what are your guys experiences with a 16g?

if that's the case how come the other years of wrx's don't have this same problem

oh they really do..just search around i have seen it happen with all years of the wrx. when i was working at the subie dealership we had an 06 rex with 15k miles and 2nd and 3rd where destroyed. My buddy has an 03 and he has 70k and his transmission has no problems and shifts perfect.. it really has to do with driver error and not the car or design of the 5 speed. Why do you think subaru wont fix customers cars if they destroy the trasmission..?

it really depends on what hp goals your looking for.. the 16g is a great turbo and can still produce good power with minimal lag. You will also need injectors and a 255 fuel pump when you upgrade the turbo. You will experience more lag with the front mount over the top mount. The front mount is a lot more expensive too and on certain kits they make you take out the fog lights and you need to run a smaller battery..just search around.
No I understand it happens but there were more cases of the 02 breaking than any other year. Subaru in fact started chnging the tranny's up a little because they had so many reports of tranny failure in the 02's.

hmm yeah its forsure a fact as soon as you mod the car the 5 speed is the first thing to go. I keep going back and forth about fully rebuilding my 02 or to just sell my 02 and my sr20det 240sx and get an 04 sti..
but yeah back to the topic..heres a great link on the tmic vs fmic
so with that said..the 16g is great for a tmic and you will only experience a draw back in torque if you are pushing past 400whp. If your goal is 350whp the tmic is a perfect choice and you will not have as bad of lag compaired to the fmic.
awesome links, thanks king. yeah im aiming for around 340-350 hp. i want to keep the civility of a daily driver withought getting too much power you know? thanks for the help everyone i really appreciated it
