New Helix catted DP

Have you guys seen this yet? Just putting it out there.

passes CA emissions!

"This particular downpipe incorporates Helix Power’s first-rate bell-mouth downpipe, with the addition of a 200 cell Metal-Substrate high-flow catalytic converter and thermal barrier heat-shield. The 200 cell Metal-Substrate downpipe has been tested by us to yield 7-10whp over the factory twin cats, while able to pass stringent California smog standards. The thermal barrier heat-shield assists in rapid warm-up of the cat for maximum efficiency and helping to reduce engine bay temperatures.... Supply is VERY limited. If this is what you are looking for, please order yours today" - Gruppe-S

hmmm........legally it works...

however, i would say that the reason it "passed" was due to a good tune...

you can get numbers like that on a good tune, esp. since its an AWD car, and you dont have to go through a loaded IM240 test, all they require is a curb idle test, and a 2500 rpm test.

and a visual inspection to verify that a converter is in place. my bet is the "metal substrate high flow cat" is just like these stainless race cats you see on ebay.....

the only way a converter can be a true catalyst is to be made of catalyst material (pallidium and about three other rare metals)

it will technically pass emissions inspections, but be aware it is not an acutal catalyst.

that is all for my technobabble today...

You're right. They mentioned that it would pass the sniffer, but obviously wouldn't pass the visual check. A legal cat needs to be a 400 cell substrate (or something to that extent) and the cat in this was 200 cell. Perhaps you can expand on that a lil oh cat guru

well..i dont know how other states are, but NOVA (thats northern VA for you yankees...) all they require is that is pass the tailpipe sniffer test, and pass a visual inspection (it is there, and in the remote shape of a cat) the only way to tell what kind of material it is made of is to take it off, and see.

i dont see that happening....well, maybe in CA!

the car passed the sniffer with that as the only cat?

i plan on putting my car back to stock when it comes time for emissions, except for the up pipe(i will run a high flow cat most of the time)

the car should still pass with that changed out and the stock 2 cats in after the turbo.

also, i wonder if they will ever have an AWD load test, because we have a huge advantage being that the car doesnt boost during the emissions test.

they wont, because the amount of money required to get every emissions station equipped with an AWD dyno is outrageous....believe me, i have been pricing dyno's...

and you can pass a sniffer test without a cat...you just need to be tuned correctly. hell....i know of several big block cars that will pass a test like that...
