Yeah sounds like a can of marbles rolling around in the engine now.
Started as a light knock at 3k rpms to the can of marbles at startup. Drove it maybe 3/4 miles tops with the knock till it went
Thinking about doing a rebuild myself.
Any pointers you guys have would be helpfull.
Thanks.

Had 150k miles on it.
Here's exactly what happened, maybe someone can give me some insight in what might be the problem.
I was driving home from work got about 2 miles away from home, downshifted and heard a rattle sound so got it home and noticed it only rattled at 3k rpm then stopped so I thought maybe a spun bearing? Listened around the engine, narrowed it down to the driver side of the engine closer towards the cabin. Turned the car off then tried restarting it but now the car wouldn't start unless I gave it gas? All other times the car started just like that but now I needed to give it gas for the engine to turn over.
so my dumb move was then to drive it around the block to see if it was going to rattle in all gears got it half way then what seems like a jump in timing maybe? Then the grinding noise started so I pulled into a turnaround turned off the engine and coasted down the hill and pushed the car the rest off the way home.
So the engine still runs, no white smoke coming from exhaust Im going to drain the oil tomorrow and check for metal shards and check the coolant as well. Im trying to be hopeful in not having to spend a ton of money in fixing it.

Any help is great!
Thanks guys.

So should I just grab up a used motor or tear this one down and see what I find. Was also thinking about porting it since ill have it all apart anyway. Would that cause any problems?
Thanks for the input guys.

Yeah like I said, I don't have a ton of money to dump in it at the moment and have it in my garage so I can pretty much take my time doing this.
Ive been researching tear down of the engine the past few days. Hopefully I can get the engine and tranny separated without a problem.
Ill post up some pics when i get to internals, maybe you guys can catch something I might miss since I'm new to this part of the game.

I didn't get to check the oil yet Paul it's been to dam cold and I lack heat in my garage, only got around to draining the coolant. I didn't notice any discoloration in it.
So far only took minor things out of the bay "Batt,Airbox,Rad,IC and disconnected some wiring". From what I seen so far is alot of oil around gaskets. Guess that explains why I went through a abnormal amount of oil. When I get around to the draining it I'm gonna hold a magnet under the drain plug and see if I catch anything.
This weather sucks!

Well I finally got around to getting the block cracked open today and this is the after effects of a spun bearing.
The one set was worn bad but as for the other set well the rest of that is scattered throughout the engine. :crying:

That's my nightmare, Chuck.

On the positive side, when it's rebuilt you'll have a new engine built to the way you like that you can rely on. :)

Spun bearings are frequently caused by oiling issues.

Looks like the crank's toast, some rods are toast. Surplus rods and cranks are generally cheap, as others upgrade to stroker kits or stronger internals for big-power mods. I'd ask a local performance shop if they have any OEM items you can aquire on the cheap.

Block should be checked by a competent builder for condition before using it as a foundation for a rebuild.

Yeah I was thinking about just doing a jdm swap for now being the list on replacement parts keeps getting bigger on this engine.
Guess it safe to say pretty much most of the parts either have to be machined or replaced in this.
Hopefully by next income tax I'll have a decent parts list made out along with the cash to begin a monster build that I can swap back in.

I miss driving my suby and its sad to see it collecting dust in my garage.
