I'm looking at buying this crank pulley. the question i have for you guys is: have you heard anything bad about putting on a lightened pulley?
I know that the gains would be minimal and some people say its not worth it. but the rotational mass argument has weight to it. and if i can shave off a few pounds here or there. i think its worth it. what i'm looking for is possible damage possibilities. Has anybody had one break on them? and Why did it break?
Also i'm looking at getting the STi Engine mounts My concern with this is: if i stiffen up the motor, would that put more stress on an already weak transmission?
I actually have that exact same pulley on my 2007 WRX. I installed it around 9,800 miles (+/-) and now my car has almost 33,000 on it. During that time, I haven't experienced any noticeable negative side effects, so I can only assume everything is ok. I don't know if you saw the HSPN how-to video on the bottom of that page, but that's actually the same video I referenced when I installed my pulley too. The underdrive pulleys are the ones that are more likely to cause problems with our cars, not so much the lightweight ones.
Also, I wouldn't worry about whether or not the actual structure of the pulley would ever break. It's made out of aluminum and it's plenty strong. There's no way that thing would break under the conditions it would experience in the engine - unless some freak accident occurred, but the odds of that are extremely low. If you compare the stock (steel?) solid pulley to any aftermarket lightweight pulley, the aftermarket structure looks much weaker in comparison, but if anything breaks due to engine stress/vibration/whatever, it would be the belt - not the pulley.
I have both the Perrin pulley and the STi Group N Engine Mounts on my '05WRX. The Group N mounts are a little cheaper at $120 (they may actually be the same ones perrin is offering).
I have had no ill effects regarding the my stock 5-speed tranny. My car is also heavily modified w/a EJ257 Hybrid Swap, Blouch TD05H-18G, ect. The tranny is doing fine. I seriously doubt engine mounts will add much extra stress to the tranny and if they do it would be minimal. If you don't launch your car like an ass and bang gears you should be fine. Also, proper tranny maintence and good fluid (i.e. Motul Gear 300 75w90) is a must.
Also, something to consider when doing engine mounts is a tranny mount upgrade and pitch stop:
OHHHHH. BURN.
I just wanted to post my 100th post.
EDIT:
So i don't look like a jackass and double post.
I just ordered the pulley from perrin. but since they would have to order the engine mounts from subaru then ship it to me. i'm going to wait, since i'm setting this up as a weekend project. but since i don't like my weekend projects to be 30 mins long. I'm open to suggestions on what else i should put on. keep in mind i'm on a deadline to have it here by saturday. thanks guys.
The Pulley came in on Friday and was promply installed. The only inaccurate part of the video that was on Perrin's website was taking the OEM pulley off the crank shaft. That dude must have some strong hands cause it took a torch to heat it up and two pry-bars for me to get it off.
Since it has been on i have noticed an increase in performance and my rpms are smoother as well.
When I swapped my pulley I didn't think it would come off either.
I did not heat it or do anything special to remove it. I simply walked away from the car for about 1/2 hour and came back and it literally slid rght off. You should just have to pull it straight in line with the pulley bolt.
I was thinking about getting the Perrin Crank Pulley as well. However, I am hestitant due to the fact that I might need to get a retune if I install this part. I'm running an upgraded turbo setup and am already tuned for it. But last when I checked Cobb's site they said that a crank pulley is still within reason of their ots stage 2 map. So I don't know.
Yep, basically, decide what color you want and then pick the brand that makes it in that color. The lightweight pulleys are all pretty much the same. I know Cobb makes them in blue or gold and Perrin only makes them in black. I haven't really researched any others.
I have an Agency Power crankpulley. Im not sure if its the 1lb model or not. It just aluminum. After installing I definitely felt a difference is low-mid range rpms.
I wish I didnt throw away my stocker though. Ever since Ive had the A.P. pulley in Ive got to give it a good bit more gas to get the car moving. Launching also took more getting used to. I can only imagine a light pulley and flywheel. I would hate it I think.
no you definitely do not need a retune to run a pulley...but just as with any modification a custom tune with the part will always give you a little bit more as you can now maximize the potential of your mods
