knock please?

SO.. i searched the forums about knock and found that knock occurs when your a/f ratio is running lean. aka not enough fuel? correct? anywho. what actually happens because of knock? i still dont understand whats going on really?

knock most commonly happens when you dont monitor / upgrade your fuel systems w/ mods riiight???

thanks for your time

Basically, the idea behind turbocharged cars work is the more air you can put into the cylinder, the more fuel you can put in. That in turn gives you more bang, which means more power. The problem with this is that if we take a look back at chemistry, we learn that as pressure increases (more air the cylinder), temperature increases.

What happens is that it gets so hot, it detonates before the spark plug can do it's thing. Thus knock. It can be very damaging to an engine, which is why we have intercoolers, higher octane (more resistance to burning), and whatnot.

Adding more fuel is an easy way to cool down the temperatures. A bigger intercooler, water/methenol injection, lowering the pressure are a few other ways.

A side note, a smaller turbocharger (less lag) will generate more heat than a larger turbocharger because the smaller turbo has to work harder to pump in all that air.

This is also a good read. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm
