K&N Typhoon quesiton

I have a 2003 WRX, completely stock. I'm thinking about getting a K&N Typhoon short ram intake. Will this make me run lean if I don't tune the ecu after installing it?

Imprezd02 08-24-2008 10:28 PM

forget the intake for now. you would be much better starting off with a catless up pipe or downpipe.

to answer your question though, lots of people run intakes without a tune with no problems but it isnt exactly a smart thing to do unless you get a tune for it.

The stock airbox is good for 300hp? i think, i know its good for well over the stock hp, alls your really gonna get is a louder spool wich you can get from the up or downpipe.

hope that helps

Thanks for the help.

If you want any type of power for the car replace the stock DP on it. The up pipe is just for a safety matter once you get to or past stage 2 standards. But yes the stock air box is good to ~300hp or so.

i know this is pointless now since we verified the true path to sucess on this predicament. however i DO run a K&N typhoon. and everyone is right for one, second.. without a tune. you will throw a MAF code.

Just for the record, and from experience. ;)

if you really want a short ram though i have a cobb and it didn't throw a code and i did notice a vary small bump in the top end.

Cobb and SPT are probaly the only 2 intakes that will not cause a problem (from my understanding SPT kind of "stole" Cobbs design). They both have the same ID as the stock piping and keep the MAF in the same location.

^ the perrin intake is one i didnt have problems with. i had it on for months without a tune and it did not throw a code. However just like any other intakes no performance was gained. a little bit better response but no power gain.

I have a K&N typhoon. Had it on about a year. No CEL's yet. Feels like it gave it some power. January 09 issue of Sport Compact Car shows dyno proven power on a WRX. Other than that my car is pretty much stock. I read alot of people posting bad things about them. I thought K&N was a good company that did extensive research and devolpment before producing their products. They only make intakes and filters. Should I take it off? If yes then please explain why. I dont want to hurt my car.

The stock intake is good for 300whp?? or 300 crank hp?

WHP or the STI would be running a different setup.

This is on an 08, not an 02-07. The 08+'s intake is a piece of crap and nearly anything is an improvement. This is not the case at all with the earlier models.

If you want to get an intake without CUSTOM tuning for your individual car, there are exactly two you can use: SPT and Cobb. All others are asking for trouble. Again, they don't do anything useful. The factory intake is a pretty decent cold air intake.

The Injen and K&N are my favorites based on design. I run the K&N.
