I guess I'm saving a lot on labor then..... I'm budgeted to spend about $11k for a fully built long block with the turbo, fmic, new clutch, fuel system, redo my intake to handle more flow, etc..... But I'm doing absolutely everything myself except for the machine work on the block and heads.

So far I've spent $2,800 of that 11,000

I didn't spend much on labor at all, just the first of my two built short blocks, diff and gearbox install/assembly, and port work. But over the past seven years I've had two built short blocks, 1 set of built heads, 3 turbo setups, full suspension, a few sets of rims, etc etc.

I didn't have the time or second car to be willing to tackle the challenge. Plus with all the wiring, I wasn't trusting myself to take on that challenge. Just make sure you do the timing correctly and everything lines up correctly. One guy that has a EVO had to bring his car back in to CBRD. After what he thought was broke valves due to his timing being messed up. He did the heads himself and self timed the engine. He blew a valve and damaged his cams. It turned out the place he sent his heads to for machine work. Sent back the wrong heads back to him and I didn't know this. But, EVO 7s and 8s Heads are custom to the block when they are manufactored. So, since it didn't line up perfectly because it was the wrong heads for his block; It destroyed his valves. Luckly, my tuner knew the heads weren't lining up correctly and had the shop double check their paperwork. Which found the error on the machine shop's part. The machine shop covered the damage due to their error. That kind of stuff scares the crap out of me from doing it myself.

EDIT: We are way OT at this point. Just thought I should point that out.
