i was told i would need to modify or replace my heat shield after adding a cobb catted dp. anyone hear of this? i was told that heat soak was an issue if i just decided to run it without a heat shield all together. also would most shops do this cheaply?
Aftermarket heat shields are not nearly as effective as the OEM cladding. Best to use a turbo blanket and wrap the downpipe with thermal tape, to manage heat soak.
u guys think id be good without the tape and blanket and just have them mod the oem heat shield? i may go with the tape but am not sure yet, its just a simple stage 2 setup...
Heat soak is no good when your stock let alone starting to crank it up. I use a turbo blanket which suits me well but this spring I will be doing the thermal tape myself. If I would have had the time I would have done it on install
Now there's a idea! An aftermarket Effective stock replacement heat shield. Just mod yours or get a blanket. Don't waste your money on a aftermarket one and def don't run without one.
been shopping around, turbo blankets are too expensive. from what ive seen ~100 bucks. im just doing a stage 2 setup (1k in parts alone). i think im going to just mod the oem heat shield. i have read a lot about the thermal tape but am not sure whether to use it, i know it should be very inexpensive. is it worth the extra few bucks? btw im getting it all professionally done. im just being extra carefull because i wont have an oh sh-- fund when im done with my build... any advice is welcome!
Make sure you get some decent thermal tape though, there are alot of companies making aluminized mylar tape with sub-par adhesives that cant stand up to engine bay temps. ... DEI is kinda the big name brand and they make a great product, Shouldnt cost you more than 30 bucks to do the underside of your stock heat shield. Their cooltape is good for 2k degrees and their reflect a gold is rated for up to 850 degrees, its kind of a trade off, the gold is more efficient at reflecting heat back down to your turbo but cant handle as much overall heat. In this case I would go with their cool tape. Its cheap and it works great.
The downpipe is really a very simple task to DIY. You could really save a few bucks by doing it yourself. Making an exhaust is a pro job. But installing 7 bolts is something most Chimps could handle. Pretty hard to fuq it up really.

- Agreed, "Cooler" parts get gold cause its up to 95% efficient. Hotter spots get silver because it holds up better. @thekamikaze kid - I totally know the feeling, everyone goes through those streaks where nothing seems to fit right. or every screw strips. You just gotta get under there and get dirty and you can enjoy the fruits of your own labor.
every time i try to do something mechanical i end up doing something like breaking bolts and stripping screws. i just plain suck at all that stuff. the most complicated thing i have done with a car is adding a cai on and i ended up having to take a hacksaw to it to make it fit, lol. (it was cheap ebay crap) as much as id love to save some money i cant do that myself and would prefer a professional do the whole thing. if anything they have the means to modify parts and make adjustments if a problem should arise. remember my car is an 03 and im sure some of the bolts wont be easy to pull out. also i am getting a bunch of other parts put on, and theres no way i would be able to do all that stuff.
I know that feeling... This stuff will help with that! PB Blaster. Made my rusted, seized, PITA downpipe bolts come out like butter(ish). It is amazing.
Also some good anti-seize when you put stuff back together goes a long way.
I've been running without a heat shield for awhile.
After reading this thread, I got one from a friend and with some coaxing (drill / tap holes) got it mounted.
The logs before and after show an 8 degree (F) intake air temperature difference!!
