Is a gasket needed?

Ok if you read my other thread you know what my problem has been for the last week. The answer to the problem was that i had a completely rusted donut gasket to my downpipe and just this morning i ripped it off. This what was causing my leak because the two pipes werent connecting properly. Now it is a perfect fit.

Now my question is... can i connect my catback to my downpipe without there being a gasket in between? I really don't want to go to subaru and buy a $40 gasket when it is not even needed. Should i just connect the two pipes without a gasket?

I'd assume that Subaru had a gasket there to serve some purpose.. if it comes to it.. go spend $40.

so many problems is right. My god I would have ripped that ##### off there long ago. . .

The donut gasket subaru uses is to help maintain flexibility at that joint to help prevent leaks in the long term. MANY aftermarket exahust makers do NOT incorperate that donut style gasket, is there production flawed? I would say hardly. My Helix DP is mated to my stock catback with no donut, running on about 1.5 years, my own makeshift gaskets used from autozone (read about 5$) and No leakie yet.

If it was leaking badly with the donut in place, what makes you think it will stop leaking if you put another on?

And why is it not mating up now? eg where is the leak?

maybe you should sell that mother on ebay and get on that mates to the stock DP
