External WasteGate

Hey guys! I currently have just the stock turbo setup running on my 04 WRX. If I wanted to switch to an external wastegate, what would I need to do? Is it even practical or am I just getting myself into trouble with this? If its not hard to do, how can I change it and what would you recommend?

On the stock turbo it is not a necessary mod. Bigger turbos start to need it. I know I get wastegate flutter with my wastegate trying to control my boost, and boost spikes to 25 psi in 5th gear, so uprgraded turbo the need starts to appear. Stock, not necessary, vf-30/34 16g, not necessary but it may help, and bigger I would want one. You need a wastegate, and a uppipe with a fitting for it.

Well, you can get one that mounts on the uppipe. Ultimate-Racing has them. Now, is it worthwhile? If you're experiencing significant (more than 3-5 psi) spike or creep, yes, it's going to be worthwhile.

I'm having spike issues myself that I can't fix for the life of me. Damn UTEC boost control. But, price this out. You're looking at over $500 to do this. Closer to $600.

My car is well, it's like 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag...

If you look around you can get it much cheaper...I know of several people selling the uppipe, then just buy an ebay wastegate and off you go.

Yes, you're right. I was talking about the up and a Tial gate. I wouldn't buy a no-name gate from Ebay, but that's just me.

I haven't seen the uppipe change yet, just the v3 downpipe that's flanged for one. Not the gate itself, but the return for it.
