I want to change my whole exhaust system on my 04 wrx, but i drive in colorado so i still need it to pass emissions. So i know that i can change the up-pipe easily (maybe). But what i am confused about is how to get a hi flow cat to fit onto the exhaust from turbo back. If i bought a cat back exhaust and a downpipe, would i need a custom built mid pipe to fit the hi flow cat? Or if i got a turbo back, would there be a piece i can take off to put a hi flow cat instead? I am really confused, and if it comes to it, i might just go catless and put back on the stock exhaust when it comes time for emissions testing.
I was just reading the first preview test Car & Driver did on the WRX and read some interesting facts.
The only reason the WRX has 3 cats is for LEV status. The pre-turbo cat is what allowed them to achieve that rating. I would say yes 1 cat will allow you to pass emissions no problem but will not keep you from having a CEL issue.
There are quite a few companies that make a dp that has a high flow cat in it. Otherwise, you could get whatever turbo back exhaust that you want and swap the stock downpipe/midpipe back in for emisions. However, it seems to me that a highflow cat in the dp would be your best bet.
As far as the cel problem is concerned, i have seen some exhaust kits that come with a "cel fix" How exactly do those work and will they work in my case where i am just gonna go single cat?
Not really, you just have to splice into a cable and solder it. I don't really know the works but this is basically it: there is a probe in your cat, that probe is connected to the sensor. The probe sends back a specific voltage value to the sensor. If you mess with the cats the voltage would jump to high thus triggering the cel. The fix lowers the voltage so no matter what you do with the cats it fools the sensor.

Ok when it comes to soldering and splicing cables...i might blow up my car. Can any muffler shop (or any other place for that matter) handle this CEL fix for the downpipe or am I gonna have to go it commando style.
Originally posted by mtskibum16 Yeah if you can't handle a CEL fix and you scared of "blowing up" your car, then you shouldn't even be modding the car at all.
Dude....i was being sarcastic. As for modding the car...you may not realize this, but most of us "noobs" as you "experts" so fondly call us are "noobs" for a reason. We haven't modded an EJ20 before. Us, newbies use your experiences through trial and error as a helpful tool. I thought that was the purpose of this forum. You're right i cant "handle" this CEL fix myself...i've got other shit to think about...I would rather trust someone with experience on modding engines (i.e. splicing/soldering wires and dealing with CEL's) than myself. I have no lift in my garage, nor the equipment to solder the CEL fix for the downpipe...unless of course i can use a metal hangar and a lighter (again thats sarcasm mtskibum)...have fun with this forum like so many of us do...if i am on this forum, its for a reason, to mod my car...one way or another. You are startin to sound like one of these NASIOC punks...(sarcasm with a smile)

by the way...how many turbo back's have you installed on that Celica GTS...
As fars as the cel fix is concerned, i read elsewhere on this forum that the 04's are a pain in the ass. Umm... i have an 04, and reading all the other post where there are multiple opinions get confusing. So has anyone installed the turboxs turboback exhaust where there is a built in cat, and if so how did u fix the cel problem? Sorry i am really new to this, i am used to taking my car to other people to fix but i wanna tune my wrx by myself.
I have an 03 and installed a TXS turboback not too long ago. I just put the O2 and egt sensors back in as they were. No CEL yet in approx 1500 miles. You can get a resistor for the one (EGT I believe) and all you do is just stick it in the holes where the probe wire connector is on the passneger side (this is what I've been told, never did it, and don't fully trust it)

Hey no hard feelings here. I wasn't , in any way. trying to talk down on you. I was saying as a joke. I know that there are lots of different skill levels out there and I, like you, am also here to learn. As far as you O2 sensor and CEL are concerned, I have also heard about alot of problems with the 04. One of my friends just installed a helix dp while I was on vacation and we installed his cat-back last summer. He installed the CEL fix that came with the dp and has benn having troubles with it ever since. I haven't gotten the chance to look at it because he went home before I got back, so I don't have any info on whether it is installed correctly or not but I'm sure it is. I have heard that the only way to fix the CEL for the 04 is with a mechanical fix. You'll have to do a search for the specifics, but it is basicaly remounting the o2 sensore out of the main exhaust flow so that it get a "like stock" reading with a catless dp. I also think that there are some people that are selling the "kits" already put together and tapped so look into that. Good luck and have fun! (Just don't blow up your car lol)
