Downpipe cat gut help

So i bought a used helix catted dp and the cat was bad in it. Im trying to gut it but the cat is right after the belmouth opening. If i dont get it completely gutted will it cause problems? Aaand any suggestions on a more efficient way of gutting the cat than a bent 12" screw driver and a hammer?

Drill and a spade bit.

Electric if feasible.

My only problem is the cat is located after the bellmouth bends so itd hard to get anything down there

Cut gut reweld would be mint if i had a welder.. think i might just go buy a small drill and a long bit

Muffler shop might be able to weld it back for you for a reasonable price. Probably would be cheaper or about the same as the bit will cost. Either way will work though. Whatever gets you the results your looking for. Just curious, how do you know the cat is bad?

DaveC03wrx 04-21-2013 02:15 PM

I could hear the cat bouncing around in it. I shoulda just put it on and drove it like that for a while. But a guy at the muffler shop stuck a camera down the pipe and found some debris n cracks. Soo im trying to gut it. Bout to go buy some rebar. From what ive been reading its not too big of a deal if the cat starts to fall apart in the dp. As long as its after tho motor. Hopefully it doesnt get sucked backwards somehow

My helix catted downpipe sounded the same way bought it used and it would rattle in side of it as well. Threw it on the car anyway and doesn't make any sound. Think that's how it's suppose to be and when it heats up it expands to the pipe.

Depends on how far you got into gutting the downpipe?

I wouldnt think so unless the flow reversed somehow. If you are gonna quit gutting it just blow it out really good with a air compressor before you reinstall but, you have gone this far. Might as well commit now.

Yeah if you started the gutting mine as well go forward and finish it. Good luck man

Thats how much ive gotten so far. I think ill blow it out with my power washer then put it on and see what happens. I just read that alot of people drill holes in clogged cats. Its just scary since its right after the belmouth curves down

Dude, be careful. The fumes that come off of it when you drill into that cat are incredibly toxic.
