detailed exhaust question?

just got my first subaru about a week ago. im looking to get an exhaust as my first upgrade and am looking for some help.

I have an 03 wrx. no major mods done to it. has a k&n typhoon intake and perrin turbo intake tube. both done before i purchesed it.

im looking for a decent exhaust system for a decent price.

So my questions are.

1. what makes one exhaust better than another? say you are comparing two 3" stainless steel turbo back exhausts with high flow cats? what would make one better than the other?

2. what up pipe would be a good choice? bellmouth would be a must of course along with a highflow cat.

3. what would be a good choice for a system? i do not want raspy sound and i dont want crazy loud that i will be getting pulled over but i want to hear it more than stock. i looked on youtube at alot of exhausts. i like the ones where you can her a lot of turbo... especially at idle. hks pulled me in quick... any suggestions?

thanks for any help in advance

1. Material used (for longevity and expansion from heat). Fitment (usually the difference between cheap and brand name). Design (bellmouth and/or divorced wastegate). Method for flex joint (2nd week point IMO when it comes to leaks later down the road). Cat design if you go that route (quick search will show you what's available). Those would be the point I would look at in terms of choosing a downpipe.

2. Uppipe has nothing to do with bellmouth. You're thinking downpipe.

3. Exhaust, I spend a good month just listening to various videos and clips. This was back before the ridiculous selection you have now. This is mostly personal preference at this point.

The first thing you should do is take that intake off. Do a little search on here and you'll see that they are not a good match with our cars.

Next you should look into the Cobb Accessport and flash a Stage 1 map on your car.

After that you can get a downpipe, uppipe, and catback system. You'll want to go with quality brands if you want it to fit right and last a long time.

Hit up craigslist, ebay and the classified forums. You'd be surprised on how much you can save.

i got a full invidia downpipe and some other brand exhaust midpipe back for $150 i believe exhaust is nopi or something all used but in great condition of craigslist.. deals are deff there also i figured why the hell not it was already a good deal for the downpipe itself. The exhaust had a resonator and muffler with everything it was too quite so i am just running the midpipe with resonator right now. It sounds bad ass not to loud while cruising but screams when your in it.. When you check vids make sure the you hear it with the car driving.. Theres a big diff from idleing and revving to driving

A high flow cat will keep the raspy out of your exhaust a majority of the time. But, of course the catless will possibly get you a extra pony or two.
