Hey guys, got a 04 wrx and every once in a while ill have a coolent smell and smoke coming from my turbo area. maybe like once every 3 weeks ill notice when i stop smoke will be coming from the back right side of the car. right by the turbo. anyone have this problem? turbo seals maybe.. the place where i bought her from about 10months ago said they replaced them any ideas!?
do you mean the back right side of the engine bay? If so, your description of your symptom (and its frequency) is similar to what occurred before my turbo needed to be replaced.
...but it could be just a hose clamp or something like that.
Any fluids making it to the ground? Any fluid stains on your downpipe? Any fluids collecting on the bottom side of your cross member? How miles does your car have?
Yes it's in the engine bay. I got 75k on her and the only thing I notice leaking is alittle power steering fluid. Coolent is also low sometimes but not alot. And there's no coolent in my oil
take your heat shield off and take a good look at your turbo. hoses would be the first way to go. try to locate where the drip is coming from exactly. it's difficult to diagnos without detailed info. if the seals were broken on the turbo you'd probably see smoke coming out the tailpipe to some degree. and this place where you bought the car from probably did not replace the seals on the turbo, as it would pretty much require a rebuild and finding the parts for an IHI turbo for rebuild would be difficult.
oh alright thanks, next time it startes to smoke again ill go and take a gooood look
