Colder temperatures and a unichip. I am sure that some of you have read about RiftsWRXs engine meltdown, there has been about 3 or more long threads on the irritable-club.

So far they seem to be blaming the unichip and the stock fuel injectors, it ran to lean and destroyed the engine.

He blames the unichip because it has no cold air correction and he blames himself for pushing the injectors to 97%. Which do you think was the bigger no-no?

If we are going to go that far with mods, (larger turbo, turbo back exhaust, up-pipe and so on), should we not use a unichip? ? I was going to go with a unichip, but now I dont know.

Interesting. I haven't read through the threads, but I'll check them out. Without reading anything,... did he have the proper gauges to monitor EGT and A/F ratios?

I'd say wait this one out until they figure out the real cause of his failure, if this wasn't it. No sense melting your engine to verify his claims!

Gerlando 12-31-1969 07:00 PM

Oh, nevermind,... I've seen his list of mods and YES he did have a whole set of gauges.

He also said his knocklink was going off and he missed/ignored it. That meant his guages told him he has a problem, he just didn't react in time. He also has a lot more mods that your average unichip user, and was still running the stock injectors.

So unless you have a uppipe, turbo back exhaust, and a bigger turbo, you are not maxing out you stock injectors YET. If you already have all of these, you need to upgrade from a uni-chip to something like a MOTEC or a Link ECU as well as running larger injectors or raise fuel pressure.

Just depends an how much power you wan't and how many mods you do before the unichip needs to be replaced with a more serious engine management system.

I am running a PE1818F turbo and a Unichip. It is getting darn cold here and yes I have had to adjust boost pressure due to temps but I have had zero problems with my car in the colder weather. I just turned down the boost to 14.8 PSI is all from 15.5 in the summer months. I am running stock injectors although my STi injectors and new Unichip is going in Monday hopefully.

Well, until the aftermarket gets better and people know just the right way to mod the WRX, I think I will stay with just a turbo-back and a unichip. I like to learn from other peoples mistakes. I will let other people destroy their engines.

That's a great way to advance the industry darkstar. <IMG SRC="images/smilies/icon_wink.gif">

What a sad view. We need more people to push the envelope and try different things. I guess we'll let people like Darkstar ride our coattails.

Darkstar 12-31-1969 07:00 PM

Pushing the envelope is fine if your made of money. But people like me have to eat beans and rice to be able to pay for mods. If I dont do it right the first time its all over.

Anyway, I am the last person who should advance the industry, I have only been around the mod world for about one year. Two years ago I didnt even like to drive! But Subaru came to me in a dream and here I am. Thank you for the criticism though I feel much better.

After seeing some of the numbers posted for upgraded turbo+ injectors + Stage2, I think I'm going to go ahead and get some. I'd hate to get bored of the Stage2 + FP after a couple weeks, then send the Unichip off for a re-map when I add the injectors. The STi's pushed by a Unichip should get me where I want to be /for now/.

Anybody heard of anybody using an AFC or the like to fine-tune the Unichip map? I was thinking it might be nice for racegas tuning to lean things out a little more.
