Never thought about that. However, I see one problem with that. If you are talking about mounting an airbox directly under the hood scoop, it seems that things would get pretty wet and dirty. I'm not sure what they did to take car of this with the 2.5RS intakes.

Most of the 2.5RS intakes that I have seen have a mandrel bent pipe coming from the throttle body and loop around to mount the cone filter somewhere in the vicinity of where the stock box is on the WRX.

It would be a nice source of cold air, not to mention really cool when you pop the hood. You would need to relocate the hotwire MAF sensor and form some toubing to the compressor inlet.

Good point phast. You could go to a front mount intercooler but if you arent running well over 300 HP I dont think that you could utilize it. Besides who would want to give up those gorgous fog lights?! :P

So, to install a front mounted intercooler... I have to remove the foglights?

Yes. You also have to cut pieces of the sub frame out that the bumber covers. I was in the same boat as you when I first started looking at front mount intercoolers. I found that you had to delete the fog lights and do a lot of cutting. Its your call but you can try.

The APS fmic from Cobb doesn't require the extensive hacking that the Blitz kit does. However, you still lose the fog lights.

Is there a specific reason why the piping is at the bottom of the intercooler? Could it be at the top? If it were at the top.. then you coud possibly keep the fog lights... or a different set anyways...

The pipping is at the bottom because that is the easiest way to route all of the pipping that is needed to get the cold air to the intake. Yeah You could reroute it to be right in front of the radiator but then what would you do about the cooling of the engine?

I've read of a lot of folks moving the IC to the Airdam and then using the Scoop for venting the engine compartment by using the STI hood cutout's. The Rex's engine compartment gets SMOKIN hot and it can't do anything but help.

Cold air intake in place of intercooler?

Back on the 2.5RS, there were kits to make the hood scoop functional with a cold air intake. I was wondering if it was possible to go to a front mount intercooler and then go to a top mount cold air intake? I like this idea better than sticking the instake into a wheel well.... could be a dirty prospect in rain, dirt, muddy conditions...
