Cats or no Cat?

Alright I'm debating on getting a high flow Catted DP and/or leaving the cat on the MP, ### I have been hearing and reading that they smell real bad without the cats and tend to have a lot of black or white smoke coming out of exhaust. I know the white exhaust is from H20 in the pipes and the black smoke is from the car running rich but wasn't sure if this was a common issue or not. Any help would be much obliged. Thanks

A properly tuned engine will have very little emissions with or without a cat. Having said that, most cars are tuned on the rich side.

If your car is tuned pretty well, you won't have any problem running catless (I'm not speaking from a legal standpoint here obviously). Black smoke is a sign it is way too rich. You should never see white smoke, as that is usually oil burning.

I always understood white smoke to be water/coolant. Blue smoke is oil burning.

I had the full turboback w/o any tuning and it was fine. I had a cat in it though. I don't think it will be that bad.

ya I was under the impression blue smoke was oil burning as well, but I could be wrong and white was water/coolant so basically if i go catless black stuff stuff will be all over my bumper/exhaust pipe, ### if that's the case 1 hp isn't worth it to me imo

i ran FMIC, up/TBE with no cats for thousands of miles and i never got black bumpers and only a small puff of black smoke would come out when i downshifted and punched it.

i did when i installed the UTEC and driving about 1000 miles. with the UTEC i was running so rich that it would peg the WBO2, datalog showed 9:1 at times with 10.5:1 at the leanest.

I've seen oil burning as white smoke... there is NO way that was water vapor comming out of those pipes.

Most "mods" ,like catless TBE, will be fine to use without a tune/engine management. Once youre raising boost leavels, intake (?), injectors....then its time for e.m.
But to get the most out of the enhancements youre making to the car e.m. in necessary.
IMO, always remember the ABC's of exhaust mod's: Always Be Catless! it will also decrease egt's alittle and probably give alittle more that 1 h.p. Besides alittle black on youre rear bumper it a tell tail sign of a moded car so people dont f#%# with you ( or do)
