Argh, what's going on! Err let me start at the beginning..



Yesterday I installed an AEM CAI into my WRX. After it was installed, I turned it on, and the CEL went on, but I just ignored it and started driving. I can hear the intake suck in air from the inside of the front right fender, which is normal, but when I shift, it blows out the air! It sounds like my blow off valve, only um.. blubberier. Like blow out your mouth, and make your tongue hit your lips up and down. It makes that noise. Anyhow, I know it's not my blow off valve making that sound, because I heard two separate sounds, and I hardly doubt my turbo begins to spool up and blow out excess pressure at less than 2000 RPMs. Is it normal for my intake to blow when throttle is released? If not.. then this sucks! Sucks.. blow, get it? Har har. Anyway, any comments? <IMG SRC="images/smilies/icon_smile.gif">

The stock BOV does put the air back into the intake when you shift (recirculating). Maybe it's a combination of you being able to hear the BOV better, and now something is loose. If you installed a water bypass (check?) valve as part of the CAI, that could be the problem. <IMG SRC="images/smilies/icon_confused.gif">

Well, the best way to see if it is indeed the BOV is to replace the stock one and see if the new sound you hear either disappears or goes down.



I don't have a CAI or an aftermarket BOV but I know that when I removed my silencer there was a definate increase in the turbo and BOV noises my car produced.



I guess what I'm trying to say is that YES, the CAI would most likely result in more turbo and BOV noise coming from the passenger side engine bay, but you might want to check it with your stock BOV just to be sure (and for your own sanity)

Wow, thanks guys. That's a good idea to check with my stock BOV. I'm not really um.. what's that word.. uh... thought.. thinkingish.. sometimes. I'll go try that tomorrow after I finish waxing the car. Oh yeah, my CEL shut off too. Guess the thingy got used to it or something. Now all I hafta do is find out what that other sound is. Thanks!

Did you get the blue AEM....I was just curious if it matched the car's color?

Yups, I did. I was thinking about how the intake now sucks in all the air coming in through the brake ducts... err if my passenger side brakes are getting enough air. I'm sure they'll be fine though. I'll take a pic of the intake once I get more batteries from my camera. <IMG SRC="images/smilies/icon_smile.gif">

the air going into the fender well doesn't normally go to the brakes. If you take a look the brake duct is at the bottom of the plastic covering. It's totally separated from the fender well, so in all actuality those ducts on the front of the bumper don't really do anything unless you mod your intake to draw air from the fender.

Did you get all those problems worked out with the AEM? I hope so. If you did, then that is the CAI I'm going to buy.

I put the stock BOV back on and my CAI was still making that blow off noise. But I put back my BOV and keep on the CAI, and after a few weeks, my car hasn't exploded or anything, so I suppose it's okay. But don't take my word for it, I'm about as ignorant as uh.. well something that's really ignorant. I really enjoy having it on, and wouldn't take it off, even if it was easy to do. (which, believe me, is not)
