Cool blown engine?

hey guys i was recently in a wreck and smashed the front of my 2003 wrx, now i just bought a 2002 wrx.
i was looking over the 2003 and discoverd that my turbo had black gunk in the exaust side of the turbo.
what the hell does this mean.
the damage on the car only took out the car to the radiator, i have big plans for this car.

You sure its not oil from blow by? Did you check your intercooler also? Thats probably your best bet.

Is there shaft play on the turbo? If you lost enough coolant, you might've "coked" the turbo. Basically the oil heats up and forms some black gunk, which damages the seals and seeps out. This may be what you're witnessing. It happened to my turbo when I had a coolant leak.
