Best Up pipe & turbo-back

I have an 02' Wagon and am looking to now replace exhaust and get a Utec. I have completed my suspension mods (strutbars, endlinks, bigger rims, new tires, with Whiteline swaybars under the Xmas tree) and am trying to research exhaust mods, but there are more opinions than ice-cream flavors.

So, can you share your experience on what is the best up-pipe/down-pipe and/or turbo-back exhaust? I don't mind mixing and matching vendors, I just want high quality.

My criteria is:

1) good performance (hp)
2) good installation and fit
3) good sound without being too loud
4) cost (not to exceed $1800)

I also need to be able to pass CA state emissions.

Thanks in advance...

technically, putting in any up pipe will make you not smog legal

does anything show up on the sniffer test, no

anything changed before the last cat is illegal as well, but thats why you keep the stock parts for when it comes time for emissions testing

my exhaust setup sounds great, its quiet at idle, quiet when cruising, and only loud at WOT

everyone i know says that my car is the best sounding 4cyl car they have ever heard

Gruppe-s.com has the Helix up-pipe and TBE package for a really good price and you could get it with or with out a cat. and like Antyoo said keep your factory exhaust set up just incase.

Perrin uppipe is my choice especially because it comes w/ the CEL fix. For downpipes, catless I say go Helix, catted- TXS downpipe w/ high flo cat.

I wouldn't get the Helix catted downpipe because the cat is so close to the turbo. I would rather get a catted downpipe that has the cat in the "secondary" part of the downpipe. Just my .02 tho.

Thanks for the info -- So to sum it up so far:

HKS UP and Stromund catback
Helix UP and TBE catback
Perrin UP and Helix catback

Did I get this right? Have read many posts on TurboXS and Vishnu. Would be interested in hearing about install issues, costs etc...

Am personally leaning toward the Helix flex UP to ease installation issues and as Cosmo reports, reduce gasket replacements/failures. Might go with Helix down and MRT tail but am undecided.

Sorry, I replied too quick. Should of had lunch b4 writing my reply:

HKS UP, Stromund DN, Apex catback
Helix UP, TBE package (with TBE DN?)
Perrin UP, Helix DN (non catted) -- avoid Helix DN (catted)

I like your third list the best. Piece it up w/ an HKS Carbon Ti catback and your set!

You guys like the Perrin Up/Helix Dn. How about a preference for cat-backs and/or tail-pipes?

By the way, installed Whitelines rear swaybar (24mm) last night after work. Took about 40min, with 20min spent trying to install the mount on passenger side. Had a hell of a time getting to the front bolt.

Have noticed a little oversteer today, but will be doing the front-end soon.

lol, ya, that one bolt for the mounts are a pain! Anyways, just ordered my combo about an hour ago. Perrin up/down, and a perrin dual tip exhaust. With gaskets, new hanger bushings, o2 sim, and a BOV, 1.75k down the drain! !Cry!

Let me know how it goes? Fit, performance, sound - install $h^t etc.

I'm partial to using a single vendor. That way if there's a fit problem, there's no finger pointing...

Happy New Year !!!
