I have an 02 as well. A catless turbo back with a catless up pipe will not run as well without some form of EM. The car will be drivable but it will run poorer than stock and much poorer than having a proper tune for the parts. Maybe it works for you or someone you know or whatever but it is far from ideal. For the price of the catback the OP could buy a used AccessPort and been done with it. If they went open source it would be even less.

Seanwrxwagon, thank you for making an effort to keep your spelling an grammar in line. We appreciate it and I wish more members took it seriously.

Anyway, The confusion here is related to the EJ205 vs the EJ255. The EJ205 responds very well to a bellmouth downpipe on it's own, even without any change in engine management. A good tune ALWAYS helps but the EJ205 runs great with just a downpipe. "Worse than stock" is not accurate. The car that has a problem with the downpipe mod is the EJ255 powered WRX (06+). Boost creep becomes a problem due to the greater exhaust flow and limited wastegate.

Many do, yes. It's easily fixable with any kind of EM though.

Boost spike doesn't get tuned out though...either have to make sure the pill is right or go the BCS route.
