Are all 02-07 WRX and STI TBEs interchangeable?
I have searched a lot on this and it seems like there is no concrete answer sure it is common knowledge but i'm a wrx noob and i just want get this assured...thanks!

but the real question is can i put an 07 sti turboback exhaust on my 02 wrx?

newtothegame 07-10-2009 10:21 PM

You can, but if its the stock TBE, its just as useless as your exhaust. The only small difference is if its an automatic or a 5spd, but they still work the same.

If you put an 07 STi turboback on an 02 WRX, it would sound a little louder but be otherwise identical. The downpipes are the same.

newtothegame 07-11-2009 12:27 AM

Mosc I agree with you mostly. There is a tab on the DP that is slightly different between the 4EAT and the 5SPD. Thats only because of the transmission. But its not enough to make a difference when mouting one or the other. And thats just stock to stock comparison, between my 2007 5SPD and my 2005 4EAT.

it was my understanding the sti had 2.5" piping while the wrx had only 2.25".....anyways a friend is giving me his 07 STi TBE so i thought i would throw it not a big fan of the stock wrx dual tip.

would adding an aftermarket downpipe to the equation change much?

xiaobei 07-11-2009 08:16 AM

suppose with just an aftermarket downpipe u wouldn't have anywhere to put the o2 the right?

man show 07-11-2009 08:51 AM

I think most aftermarket downpipes come with bungs to install the O2 sensor - I know my Cobb catted dp did. An aftermarket bellmouth style downpipe would give you a pretty decent gain in power, but you'd have to make sure you also have some kind of engine management to go along with it or you risk running into some pretty serious problems. That setup is basically referred to as "Stage 2." Check out the info on this website and I'm sure you'll find the answers to many of the questions you're probably getting ready to ask: Unabomber's Manifesto - NASIOC

Since he's running a bugeye, he should be fine without an e-manage. STI downpipe's are usually bigger, but you'd benefit more from a 3" aftermarket downpipe (if you're planning on getting more power). Be sure to check your state's emissions laws if you decide to go aftermarket though since there's a variety between catted and catless.

wow so much info ....and debate on this seems the best set up would be just using the STi catback on the wrx downpipe/midpipe....what do ya think? Of course i'm looking for best performance...i mean i'm getting it for free...i do understand there's almost nothing to gain but I'd like a little louder sound as well. so should i just swap the catback or go for the whole TBE...or maybe just the sti axleback...i heard the sti cat is bigger...

Even if the STI haas a bigger diameter, its only a 1/4" buy your numbers and that wont change a thing considering the design of it. Yes, it would more than likely change your sound, but thats really about it. You can run yours without EM but you wont get the full potential out of your setup. An aftermarket DP will also drop weight for you, the stock one is just covered in heat shielding. Just for reference this is a pic of my 07 stock DP, the STI design is the same:

mosc 07-11-2009 06:08 PM

The STi's cat-back (not the full TBE) is slightly wider yes, but all that really does is make noise. It's very restrictive at the downpipe so anything beyond that isn't going to matter much.

turmic 07-13-2009 12:17 PM

The opening on the STI DP is the same as newtothegames pic. So, if the opening at the turbo is the same. What does it matter if the piping is slightly larger? Still not a DP worthy of a Stage 2 upgrade. Way to restrictive....
