A 400AWHP daily driver.

I am looking to purchase a Bugeye soon. I want to modify it. its gonna be a long slow process i am sure. but i have a goal of 400hp at the wheels and still have it a daily driver. is this a realistic goal or am i dreaming?

IMHO, you would be better off trying to reach that goal with the characteristics of a 2.5L engine...

but I'll let the others get into the gory details

You can do it, just going to take some time and money. Built engine and transmission will be two of the biggest and most expensive parts done to it. Just a thougt, have you drive a 400 WHP car before? Or a WRX? They are quick in their own right.

i have driven a few WRX's and i love them i am looking for one as we speak. but i am partial to the bugeye style. i was just throwing a number out there i am not an unreasonable guy if it is impossible or nearly impossible i have no problem rethinking my goals. i am just looking for the badest car around. i am not planing on doin the work overnight it will be a gradual build.

Anything is possible. Budget is the big question. Figure 10-15k$$ just to build a bullet proof tranny and the internal engine work needed and I think thats on the conservative side. I would definitely start from the tranny up though. I don't know what the differentials can handle power wise before you start breaking things. Thats a lot of power for an AWD. SOunds like fun! Go for it! Whats 400awhp like 550-600 at the crank?

Here is a good thread on engine internals:

450whp from ej20 what parts should I get?

To reach your goal you will need, a built motor, tranny, EM with a good tune, and axles.
Most put a 2.5 hybrid motor in the bugeyes, Andrewtech can build the tranny, a Hydra or maybe a Utec for EM, and the Driveshaft shop for axles.
My buddy's 02 is making 425whp, he has over 25K in the build. The car is great for the drag strip but not much fun on the street.
I think a 300whp car for DD is going to be a more realistic goal, and cheaper. This can be done on the 2.0, and if you can drive, the stock tranny.
Mine is 285 whp.

Im sorry I hope you didnt think I was insulting or anything like that. Like oldfartracer said 300-350 would be pretty nice. My WRX is only the second fastes/highest HP car I have dirven. I had a 495 HP focus at one time, but it was way too much.

I run a stock clutch, and no I don't dump the clutch. I main run track days, and a few autoX. I use this technique, Shifting Tips. The stock clutch will slip just enough to keep the tranny happy. I have seen people blow tranys at stage 2 and a heavier clutch. The stock 5 speed needs a little slip or stronger gears.
My buddy is running a 6 puck in his set up. He has broken the tranny twice, PPG gears, and the front and rear axels.
Big HP = bigger problems and deeper pockets.

damn that's a ton of hp to be breaking ppg gears.

but anyways it sounds like that number of 400 sounds good to just say that. but you would probably be amazed at stage 2 numbers which is only about 210-230 whp and u might think twice about how much u really want. realistically i would shoot for 300-350 whp like newtothegame said. 300awhp will dominate alot of cars, but if you really wanna dump all your money into getting 400awhp dont let us stop u, alot of people with thick wallets do it.

i am far from a thick wallet i just wasn't sure what the engine would do or what the car would hold. so i threw a number out there. i by no means have a thick wallet at this point in time so i think 300 350 will be a nice goal to shoot for i know i would be happy with 250 but still what to try and shoot high what's a goal unless its a challenge lol

That was a good read oldfart. Thanks man! Cheers!

cblack4 - You will be plenty happy with 250whp, but the mod bug only allows this happiness to be temporary.

To get to 350whp youd need a drop in air filter, silencer delete, turbo back exhaust, bigger fuel pump, bigger injectors, an uppipe for safety, a bigger turbo, front mount intercooler, a BOV to safely hold the higher psi, EM and a good tune. And thats just the motor aspect of it. Youd also need a built transmission, something like either a 6 speed STI swap or PPG gears. Also you would need a better suspension setup if you wanted to keep that monster on the road during hard turns and such. But i say if thats what you want, go for it.
