Hey there. Please forgive me if I was supposed to go to the NOOB forum first.
Two years ago my son and I built an 05 RS to look like a WRX with STI wing. He loved it, but it was less than exciting engine wise. He sold it and bought a maxima....well...as you can imagine.....well you know its a maxima...
I bought a wrecked 04 WRX in WR blue. Car is a mess. Got all the body panels I needed, with most of them already the same color and just in need of a light buff. The rest I will paint to match.
The problem is the engine. loud tick (very loud) which goes away when warm, so either piston slap or?? And a secondary rattle/knock when you rev it. This I assume is the spun rod bearing that I read so much about. The strange part is with a stethoscope, it sounds like it is coming from the passengeer side head, but maybe that is side the bearing is spun.
I don't want to bother with this engine.
I found a few used engines around, but the two Subaru guys in town are hard to deal with, and a deal never seems to be a deal.
I read alot about JDM engines. I am not totally clear on the advantage, but it sounds as they are stronger and can handle more power? More importantly, they are alot more of them around than used USDM engines. (if I am using the wrong acronyms, please let me know).
Found a non AVCS JDM engine for a decent price.
From what I have read/searched, i need to;
use the stock intake and exhaust manifolds
change the cam gears and main timing gear (the stock ones onto the JDM)
What am I missing?
