Hey guys so Im new to the forum and Ive been looking around and reading a lot before post anything. Like everybody knows the new WRX is out and I haven't made up my mind yet in which one to choose. Right now Im deployed and I thought about getting the car as soon I get back, (march). Ive read all the new specs for the WRX 2015 and i think is a better machine than a 2014 but theres a lot of aftermarket for the 2014 already...
so with the mpg of the 15, the +3 hp more and +14pounds of torque over the 14, the 6 speed tranny, buuuuuuut more expensive... vs the 14 that has bigger engine, and a lot of aftermarket already which one would you choose?
It really depends on what you are planning for it. If you are going to want to immediately start modding it, then get the 14, if you want to keep it close to stock and use up that warranty for a while, then the 15 would be better. For the price of the new 15, you could get a nice STI with low milage from earlier years though.
Subaru's can handle a beating. A lot of friends of mine own previous STi's and WRX's.
They might need some tuning up, but hey, if you buy a used car.. I would do the same.
Now if you are strictly trying to go for newer.. this decision is really all up to what you WANT. Just like Brockton said, If you are trying to go for modifications quickly, go ahead with the 2014. That is what I currently own and I love it. I've had it for a month now and I already have bought a CBE and Accessport, I plan to be STG 2 around Summer.
If you are trying to just do some basic bolt on's, go with the 2015. (Only CBE and Intake)
But keep in mind when you install a new Intake that isn't stock. It WILL need a tune, so you would have to go pick up an Accessport.
^ that is when they make an AP for the 15s. Maybe a few months for that, being it's a new setup.
OP, If you go with the 14 the issues have been worked out of this setup by Subaru and aftermarket companies. You never know with a new setup what may come up over time. I'd wanna wait before buying a first gen of something so any kinks can be worked out, but that's just me. Not trying to discourage you from the 15 by any means either. I'm sure it will be sick!

Hey Sammy. I'm new to the forum and new to WRXs so I can't compare my new 2015 REX to past years. Some background: I've run a streetable track prepared E36 M3 for the past 10 years as a driving instructor for the BMW CCA and have had various daily drivers over the years. I just traded in my GLI for a new 2015 WRX and I can tell you that the car REALLY handles. With only 350 miles on the ODO the car is very fast with great torque that comes on quickly - but it was the handling that sold me. The car turns in amazingly well, corners flat and digs into the turns under power. Very neutral and little to no understeer (of which I spent thousands to cure on the M3). Plus the suspension is very compliant for every day driving (something my M3 is NOT). I'm very impressed with the power delivery too...very smooth for a turbo and it spools up quickly. I'm looking forward to taking her to the track to get a better feel of what she can do!

I bought my '15 mt6 about a month ago and already have 3000 miles on it.
The handling is phenomenal!! I read where it has 15 to 16 pounds coming out of the puffer and overboost. My guage told me yesterday I got the boost up to 22.1 !
this car reminds me of my sportbikes regarding it's a part of me. I'm trying not to be over confident because it sooo easy to corner.
AND, with the 6th gear this year I'm getting over 30 mpg hwy/city driving. When I really get on it I'm still at 27 mpg. God I LUV this car!
What's up. I'm new to the forum, but not new to Subarus. I've been selling Subarus for Byers since 2010, but I've been driving WRXs since 2005. I'm a car enthusiast 1st and a sales person 2nd.
15WRX, thanks for your input! It helps me on my decision. I have a 2011 now, but I've been itching to order a 2015. I will probably place my order any day now.
If this helps anyone... I went to the 2015 WRX ride and drive. Even on winter tires (due to the temperature at the time) it handled way nicer than my stock suspension '11. And the boost does come on quick. I was trying to gauge it and it seemed like I felt pull at 2,700 rpms in CVT 4th "gear". Wicked. I will buy a MT, but the CVT is actually bad a$$. So if you happen to prefer an Auto, you won't be disappointed. It shifts fast. I recommend Sport # mode for fun driving though.
The ride is quieter. We had them on the freeway for part of the street drive. And the articles make a big deal about the stiffer frame and reduced body roll, but I felt the ride in down town High Street to be comfortable. The struts seem to dampen well. But I know opinions may vary. The door speakers put out more bass than my '11 and no rattles. The enclosures were enhanced for that. The Harman Kardon is sick, if you don't mind the cost. It's the best Subaru optioned H/K audio system I have ever heard.
Also about the hp and tq claimed numbers... road and track dyno'd 15 WRX and STI. Google search that and tell me what you think.
The other guys are right though. If you want to buy it and instantly build a 400hp car, the support is not out there yet. But I'm sure someone will figure it out over time. Everyone knows we are a big tuner market.
Ok, that's all I got for ya. I come on strong sometimes, but that's just because I get excited about the new stuff. It's fun for me to think about buying a new WRX. I'm sure that's why my manager sends me on the ride and drives. He gets to sell another car to me lol.
The older models are still very strong cars. I don't think you can go wrong with a Subaru of any year.
In my opinion the 2015 has better options, but looks TERRIBLE! Sorry to any of the 2015 owners out there.
But if you are looking for brand new, the 2014 would be my choice. All the bugs have been worked out
I will say I didn't prefer the looks of the '15 when I first saw pictures. Mind you they were some pretty unphotogenic angles. Then I saw later photos from better angles and thought it looked much better. In person, I think it looks great. It's also easy to appreciate when you can see it side by side with older models. Little things like the rocker panels are more sculpted instead of just being straight lines. It looked like it was designed to be a wide car, instead of the '14 that was originally a slimmer design with widened features added to it. Sleek instead of muscular. But some of the sleek lines and body features are hidden from certain camera angles. It's much easier to appreciate in person.
I am new to Subarus and I just picked up a 15 on Saturday. I cant compare it to anything else as I have not driven any other WRXs but this car is one bad ride. The speed is obviously impressive but when you go ripping around a corner at stupid speeds and with very little body roll it keeps asking for more.
I just picked up my 2014 wrx ltd sedan. I drove both 2014 and 2015 and in my opinion, 2014 was the better car... Rough and ready with a nice grunt! 2015 was too well behaved and ugly!!! Also as it's a new gen, it's bound to have teething issues where as with the last of the 2014, everything is ironed out.... This is my 5th wrx and I love it... I won't be buying the 2015 shape
These cars aren't perfect but extremely addictive!
Going back to 2014 vs 2015, I was lucky enough the test them both side by side within the same hour! The dealership knocked $3k off the 2014 and that was just the icing on the cake.
2015's handling seemed slightly tighter, brakes were sharper and steering was slightly crisper but not enough feedback on the brakes and steering. It didn't have the "grunt" of the 2014 and it didn't feel faster (although they claim it has more torque and bhp)... Felt more like my old 2013 civic Si than a Subaru.... And... It has lost most of the burbling noise... And ... It looks a lot more like a standard Impreza than a Rex .... It need more bulges and bigger flared arches to make it stand out more.
If anyone want the 2014.. There aren't many left and if you push the dealers, they will give you nice offers!
It would seem to me that the 14 would have more potential than the 15. We get a 2.5L that comes with 14lbs of boost from the factory. The new gen is 2.0L with 18lbs of boost, producing about the same numbers (they claim). Seems to me like producing more power would be much cheaper and safer in the old gen since we don't have to run as much boost as the new gen to put up similar numbers.
That being said, I don't know much about the 15 tranny. The 6speed sounds enticing, and probably will be more capable than older gens 5speed.
Hey Sammy,
I am new to the Forum and new to Subaru's. I recently picked up a 2015 WRX and the car impresses me more and more everyday. I opted out and got the CVT, which I am extremely happy with. It shifts very smooth and is a total blast to drive. I had it off road the other day smashing up and down a mountain and it was hands down the most fun I have had tearing up dirt roads.
It is a little frusturating that there are not that many after-market parts yet. All that I have done to mine is tint, K&N Filter and Rally Armor mud flaps.
I plan to drive it very hard and use the warrenty, but to each their own. I can wait a while till more parts come out, the 2015 has more then enough to get me by for awhile.
I picked up my 2015 on August 8th. My feedback would be this I drove a 13 WRX for about 2 years I've drove the 15 for about 2 days. I do believe for me personally the 15 is a smoother more comfortable ride, with less road noise, brakes are better and I did go with the CVT option as well. The interior is also put together better than my 13. I feel that the 15 body style is more aggressive I like the bigger lower rockers that is has as well. Again it's only been two days but I wouldn't go back on my choice. I had my 13 completely stock as well the exhaust notes aren't that different at least to my ears.
You lost me CVT, Oh well to each his own. I like the new front end but the tail kinda reminds me of the newer Civics. Its cool to hear that its a more refined ride, My fiance is looking at a 15 or maybe waiting until 2016 depending on work.
Very hard choice!! Which ever year you get your going to still drive by the other year and still ask yourself if you made the right choice. I know I do. I myself went for the 2015 in the end because it just seemed a little more refined. I do agree with the people saying the 14 is probably a little safer to mod though. Reason being I see my 2015 spike sometimes at 21.1 psi I wouldn't want to add much more boost than that. If I had to guess that's all those accesports do is add more boost and maybe adjust little timing and fuel. Kaboom!!!!! I will take my chances when it's time though. So far 2700 miles on my 2015 limited no problems and its definitely a fun car to drive. Oh yea the 14 is probably slightly faster in a straight line but the 15 is a little more refined in the corners.
Subaru needs to work out issues with the intake valves if they are going to continue this DI motor.... Unless I am missing something that Subaru is doing to combat the issue on almost any other DI motor
