2.0/2.5 hybrid build ?'s

I am ordering a ej25 from outfront motorsports with race bearings, ARP studs, JE pistons, and H beam rods for my 2004 wrx. I am keeping the heads from the 2.0 motor, and Besides sti exhaust, and wahlbro 255lph fuel pump this will be the first major engine upgrade on this car. My question is this... Will this motor run smoothly with stock ecu and without a larger turbo, and upgraded injectors, for the time being until I can get some more cash together?

I would just hate to have this hanging in my garage for a couple months while I am saving more money.

You need tuning for it. You cant just bolt it up and run it.

I guess what I am trying to find out is how in depth the tuning is going to have to be. If it is going to be a huge deal I will just wait until I get the stand alone unit as well. But if a quick tune will get it running normally then I will bolt it up straight away and break it in while I am waiting for the other stuff. They offer an 180 day warranty so I would want to put it in asap to make sure that everything is perfect before I put some real boost on it.

Look into opensource tuning. Im sure there are some base maps for it since the hybrid build is becoming more and more popular. You wouls just need a laptop, the cable and download some software. Just do a google search, or search on here to find out what you need. I honestly dont know much about it (I run the Cobb AP).

thats the cable you need...but if you've never tuned before I recommend finding someone that has tuned subarus before and observing them and/or getting pointers from them

Yeah, you'd need it tuned to run a hybrid. Even though its fairly stock.

Opensource is no different than any other EM thats used the factory ECU. You can buy premade custom maps or take the car to get dyno tuned. Its not like you have to do the tuning yourself.........

absolutely... I agree with you completely and I will definitely not be tuning this by myself. I am booking a few runs on the dyno at the mustang down the street and will have some very helpful friends there with me. Hopefully, we can get it running smooth enough to atleast run until I get the bigger turbo and fuel enhancements. I just need to decide on a turbo size now.

Good luck and be careful. I've had plenty of friends who "knew what they were talking about" turn out to be completely wrong about everything.

What are you looking for out of the car? Usually a 16G or 18G spool well and provide great power for the 2.0, but since yours is a hybrid, I would at least look into the 18G. Check out blouchturbo.com, great people who really know their stuff.

Honestly, I am just looking to build a conservative, and reliable daily driven car with around 300 awhp (pump gas). I know that some people think that I should go for more but honestly I want to keep it conservative and safe. I cannot remember who recommended outfront motorsports but thanks, they have been very helpful and very reasonable in their pricing. I was out the door with delivery of the built sti short block for around 2500 (including gasket kit).

I am still looking for the following:

clutch <-- any recommendations (meaning you use it) for a nice street application?
larger turbo
injectors
fmic
ecu upgrade of some sort
gears <--- has anyone here used ra gears?

and only after it is tuned right will I sleep at night.

yeah, I am going to be taking pictures as I go and posting them here along with a final dream crushing dyno result... I figure this will probably take about two months to finish, so please bare with me. After this, I will be moving on to brakes/suspension.
