ok so here's the deal... got me a subie rs wagon automatic for $600... interior is in great condition, motor not so much... from what my mec uncle said.. i can ride it as long as i don't got stupid with it... i can get me a jdm complete motor 6 speed trans for under 5000... then i have to buy the other misc parts... probably under 1000.... mec said 2000 in labor to do the complete swap..... that means 8000 for an sti.. from an rs 2.5 auto... is it worth it? or sell the rs and just buy an sti? ... SIDE NOTE this is my first subie... ive always wanted one, but never can afford one with out going in debt..... also very new member here...... on another, SIDE NOTE.. subie crew are awesome....when i was younger, i notice that most import scene are obnoxious.. sorry but its true... thats y i ended up with a euro car(still have my mk2 jetta with vr6 swap)... but ever since i got the subie... ive been getting lots off nods from other subie, it dont matter what gen they have.... is it the just the subie crew or has the scene change for the import folks?....
make sure motor swaps are roal legal where you are. and by that i mean make sure u can pass emissions and get is resgistered. if you can make it road legal with the JDM ECU, 100% do the swap.
if you have to retain the USDM ecu for whatever reasons, do not do the swap. the car will run yes but not like a true STi and you wont be too impressed. there is also extra work to do so your labour costs will go up.
It's a Subaru thing. I never got waves or thumbs ups from people in my Honda, BMW E30, etc. The first day I got my WRX I had 3 other Subaru drivers wave and I was like, "wtf, are my lights off or something?" Nope, just brotherly love, haha. Caught me off guard as well.
I'd consider replacing or fixing the motor on the impreza then sell it for more than you bought it. The reason why I'd do that is becuase doing a full swap is so time and money consuming. It would be easier to start with a wrx or just buy an STI. Plus that impreza would make a great first car so I would really consider fixing the impreza and then reselling it.
that would be a fun swap, thats my vote for sure. I guess it does depend on if that car is thrashed in ways that affected more than the drivetrain at that price
