When i think about driving a WRX in the sand, i think how awesome. With that being said i cant possibly imagine a way in which sand would NOT get into you car. The particles are so small and the amount of wind blowing it all around its bound to get in through your grill and hoodscoop etc. I dont know how harmful it is, but i dont think there is a way to do it without getting sand in your car, even through the door cracks.

Garage
They make special air filters for doing that. Also, you should clean them afterwords.

i have been in sand a few times (just look at my avatar) and i didn't get any sand inside my car, and i was just sure to clean filters and as far as the intercooler i haven't had any issues and it didnt seem like that much had even gotten to the hood scoop area

put like a thin mesh net infront of your hood scoop, maybe that will keep some sand out of your hood scoop
