i went to go look at this 2004 wrx sti. When i get there i check it out, from the outside i could see it had ssr rims, exhaust, sparco seats. then i started it up, man was it loud. Now heres where i need help! ive read everything about buying modded cars but i really liked this one but heres the problem. It had a boost gauge pod where the clock was and doing this he must have screwed with the electrical b/c the cruise control light was flashing. also the car almost sounded like it was chugging or somin. idk if this is what subies do when they have and exhaust or somin i have no idea. and from the outside you could hear a faint click.......click......click from under the car but that went away with giving it some gas. Now im new to subies and i would like some help. should i even consider this or not. it has 64000 miles and they want 17500
That sounds kind of cheap for an STI. And I thought I read somewhere that the CC blinks when there is knock or a CEL, but you mentioned nothing about a CEL. But I would stay away from it just because its modded.

^+1. id stay away from anything modded. the low price does seem pretty fishy for an sti. i dont know about you, but when i was looking around for a wrx i wanted stock so that way i could have the pleasure of building it up the way i wanted, and doing it all myself and getting that amazing satisfaction after you put a part on.
Mosc, are any of these "Should I buy this car?" threads stickied? This is like the fourth or fifth one in the last couple weeks and I feel like a parrot. We keep explaining the horrors of buying something with a lot of mods.
To answer your question, this thing sounds like a money pit. Those are just the things you SAW when you were there, how many things do you think he put a bandaid on before you got there. There is a reason he is selling this car for that price, he wants it gone quick. Don't buy his headache.
thanks guys im gonna pass on it cause i def dont want to take over other peoples problems. but i thought all it had was an exhaust when i first saw the pictures but who the hell knows what was done to it
I bought an 02 WRX with a bunch of mods for 12,250 , it only had 38k miles on it when i bought it last year. It ran great looked great, no sounds or anything cept backfiring which i finaly replaced the spark plugs and found out he had a larger gapped plug in, and now it no longer backfires. I havnet had any problems with it at all, although i would still like to take it and get it retuned. His story was he just graduated medical school. Was moving across country maybe or maybe just going to float or something, and didnt really want to take it. But he did go buy an 04 sti a week after i bought his wrx. I did notice the warranty ran out right before i bought the car. So i dont know. I have a little clicking around the heads, most prominate if i need an oil change. I was very cautious about buying an already modded car too.
just an 04 WRX non-STi for that price is an okay deal, but a STi for anything lower than $24k is kind of suspicious to me... I'm going to start looking for an 03 wagon soon for myself.... Good thing about the wagons are that they are more likely to have not been abused, and most likely to be stock... And they are considerably cheaper than their sedan counterparts...
And to get onto topic, if you push the gas in and it's still lagging or chugging for a little and then goes on normally, then it's either a boost leak, exhaust leak, or misfire or sommething along those lines, good thing you decided to move onto the next car... never know what the heck it was with that car...
my car clicks, but its just one of the wheels for my AC, 600$ to replace. Its fine to buy used car's if they are in good condition, subies do kind of chug my suggestion is ask to have to car checked out at a auto shop before you purchase it, check piston compression make sure the frame isnt bent, definitely check car fax for any accidents ETC. If you can find the right used car it will be worth your money, but at the same time its a win loose situation. Good Luck man!!!!
