Question short ram Questions?!

I'll first admit I'm a newbie and I need some help/advice. What is this about a heat shield for an intake? I recently installed an AEM short ram intake on my wrx and I'm having some trouble. I bought it used with a K+N filter, yet it looks brand new. The guy sent it with a MAF sensor already on it. That MAF I assume was bad cause I got a check engine light when I fired it up. I fixed that problem by putting on my stock MAF, however 100 miles later the check engine light was back. I had the codes checked and it's definitely something with the MAF sensor. The sensor itself was dirty and the glass was cloudy on the intake side. I'm wondering if maybe the filter was over-oiled and it messed up the sensor... Can I fix it buy a replacement somewhere? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I'm wondering if I should just go back to stock and buy a K+N flat filter.

Probably from the MAF housing not being the same size as is a common problem....going back to stock wouldn't hurt...just take out the Air Baffle and all will be well

Check this out:

The CAI arguement explained...

I'd stick with the stocker and a K&N drop in filter.
