short ram advice

ok so i just found out that my car was never tuned for the perrin short ram intake that was on when i bought it. question is what should i do now? are there any intakes i can put on that dont require a tune that will give me the same performance? i dont have any tuneras in my area, so i cant get a tune. should it be okay without one?

I'd put the stock one back on till you can either tune it or get an AP. Most manufacturers claim you won't need a tune or set off CEL's with their intakes, but that's not true. There's a couple you could put on and likely not set off a CEL (perrin/spt/cobb) but without the tune it wouldn't be doing much of anything for you besides making you lean out. If there's no tuners anywhere around you I'd just invest in an AP from Cobb. Be warned its flame on with this thread lol! I hate when people say "search it!" when most questions can easily be answered in seconds rather than being a jerk about it though.

Yeah it'll def run lean untuned whether ram or cold air and you could absolutely damage your engine. I'd say take it off till you have the supporting mods to go stage 2 with a protune.

From the last paragraph of the link...

These filters are usually re-usable and are less restrictive than ordinary ?paper? filters. They are great because they will add horsepower,do not require tuning, and can be cleaned with a special kit that is inexpensive. The factory box will also flow enough air to handle 375+ hp.

Dryflow filters are a bit nicer than... lets say a K&N oiled filer/COBB

Someone on here has a stock unit i'm sure. Drop a dryflow in there and reset your ECU.

You get an AP yet?

It's really hard to beat the stock air-box with a intake silencer delete and a hi-flow drop-in filter.

I did this with a K&N drop-in filter. (or the drop-in of your choice) And a velocity stack from Auto zone. http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113. Look at posts #3-#7. I doubt I will ever need or find anything that works better than this.

I can't seem to find a dryflow drop-in for an 02-07 WRX I even Googled it!

just got this replay from perrin, what do u guys think?

"Thanks for your interest in PERRIN! The normal sized PERRIN short ram intake does not require a tune if you are running the factory tune. If you are already running a custom tune, you will want to look into getting another tune. If you have any more questions, let me know, thanks!"
