New to the forum and to the world of import cars specifically AWD. I've been reading up on forums trying to decicher acronyms (FMIC DP CAI etc) and I have made my decision to pick up a WRX. I was looking for a 2010 base sedan in black. However a local dealer has an 09 in black at a good price with 0% for 48 months.
Only question i have that I'm slighty paranoid about, and I apologize if it's been asked before....Is there some bearing issue with the 2009 or is it just the 2008 models? I've read mixed reviews on multiple sites and I'm wondering if i should go for the 2010 rather than 09?
Yes there is a known issue with 2009s within a certain build date range. Can't remember the range though, I think it's mostly the ones built in 2008 and really early 2009. If there is an issue it will be covered under warranty and they should give you a loaner car.
Visix is right, its the early built 09's that were built in 08. I just turned 7500 on my 09 and i couldnt be happier..only problem i ran into was a nail in my tire.

I appreciate the response's If the car is still at the dealer I would think its a later built vehicle... but who knows, I'm trying to search now for VIN's that are effected.
Good luck with your purchase. Dont know if you have stumbled across this link yet. But should help to understand the car, adn a little bit to the proven ways to gain good power out of it:Unabomber's Manifesto - NASIOC

Now that's just cheating Josh... LOL. Didn't even wait for a mod question
I believe the range for the bearing issues is from July through September of '08. Here's the thread I unfortunately had to post in: 2009 Impreza WRX motor issues - NASIOC.
I have only read more and more pages of people with these issues popping up (I am the same user name on NASIOC). The deal with it is, though it's a known issue there has been no recall issued by Subaru. It's a no questions asked policy (from what I hear through the service manager, but I still took off my Down pipe and reflashed the ECU so they couldn't mess with my warranty) and the couple days I had a loaner wasn't too bad. The only real boner is I have to break in a new motor (which is very slightly better with some stronger components to boot). Not fun, but if you end up getting one of these bad motors like I did, you will end up with a better long block than you started with and 0 miles on it. Though the chassis still keeps the original miles.
Over all I'd get the 2010 if you have a choice, but if you're gonna save a few grand on an '09 then by all means take the chance. They're virtually the same exact cars from what I know, but the '10's have a few more colors to choose from or something lame like that. Well, I hope you get in one soon so you can have as much fun as the rest of us!
Just on the Subaru website and when u go into build a '10 WRX it only offers the same colors as the '09. I was interested what the new colors would be. Sometimes i wish i would have bought mine in red.

Thanks again for all the responses, If colors are the only differences I think I'll go with the 09 and check for a build date on the invoice. The only last question I have is about any extended warranty's the dealer might offer... should I get it? I was told the extended warranty's are benificial on turbo cars.
i bought it...the only thing on my car that isnt covered is the brake pads and wiper blades. Even if i curb a wheel i can take it to the dealer a pay a one time $100 deductible and they will replace it...it was an extra $2700 but it extends my warranty through the whole life of my loan and it also included gap insurance.

I'm with Boosted09, I got it and the coverage is really extensive. Also, having it last the life of the loan (or longer the way I'm paying this crap off trying to beat interest, lol), is a real comfort. It's quite alot of money I think for the extra warranty, but I'm all about trying to make my car last and protect my investment. The gap insurance I a must though even if you don't get the extended warranty in my book. These hold good resale for the most part, but still would hate to have some touron (tourist/moron) total my car and owe the bank money after the insurance ya know.
