Driving home a week ago i get CEL. Car drives fine but kinda rough on idle. Next day I get the code read and it's p304. Next day take it to the subaru dealer and they work on it. I get a call stating it was the plugs and they changed them. 1 hr later they call me and tell me that the plugs aren't the issue and there still pulling the p 304 code. I go down and pick my car up and I'm told it's burnt vavles on # 4 2,500$ to fix LOL ( no leak down test performed ) I take the car home and start checking forums and friends help.
Dealer
* Plugs wires and coil pack changed at dealer ( only charged for plugs do to part swapping)
* Injector #2 and #4 swapped by dealer
Me
* Filled tank with chevron 93 gas and a can of BG44k
* Cleaned MAF let dry and reset CPU over night
* Cleaned the ground cables that run to the intake manifold and checked for vacum leaks ( NO hick ups in system when spraying for vacum leaks.
Now 7 days later car still has a rough idle and issues with cold start. Car drives fine and still has the power in 1st 2nd all the way to 5th and no back fires. Next thing I'm going to do is a leak down test tomorrow or the next day.
hrm... the first thing i would suggest would be plugs. I would call around to several subaru dealers and see what they would say. Even if they are not local. look up earl duff subaru in Harriman tennessee. and talk to daryl in the service department. he might be able to get you some info.
I had a cam position sensor, MAF and bank 1 lean code at one time, car would not run properly, smelled like it was running rich (it was weird.. lean but rich...) the car would run but no power PERIOD. most i could do is roll in first gear. and i had it towed to a local dealer in knoxville, and they were trying to sell me an O2 sensor etc. And i told them, the sensor has been relocated... it does not need one. (this was after they reprogrammed my ecu.) turns out they wanted 300 dollars for further diagnosis. So i towed it out of the shop. sent it to harriman Tennessee 60 miles out of where im located, in less than a day they call me and say "you have a wire to your ecu that has been cut. we repaired it for 120.
So they definatley know their stuff. they have seen everything. as far as a misfire code outside of required maintenance and injectors, i have no idea. but hopefully my story and advice will help you achieve the answer your looking for.
I couldn't agree more with your story. Dealers are all about the money and up sale. The plugs and coil and Injector have been swapped out aleady. So tomorrow I'm taking it to another dealer in my town Nate Wade in SLC, Utah. Will see what they have to say. I'll keep ya posted
i would call and ask advice on it before i would take it. im not offended, but i work for a dealership. HOWEVER, i couldnt agree with you more that most dealers are out to get you. yeah keep me updated, that way if i run into the same problem i have a better idea of what might be going on.
So get this. Driving home I start smelling gas so I pull over pop the hood and there is gas squirting out of one of my injectors ( driver side front injector ) is this injector #2? I ask this cause the dealer swapped out #4 and #2 and now I'm spraying gas. If that's the case 7:15 am in front of the dealer I'll be waiting for the techs and reps to show up.
