Hey everyone, I've posted on here a couple of times before, but this time I have found a Wrx i really like and is in my price range. Just looking to see what you all think, please any input is really appreciated, thanks.
Replace that radiator cap and you're going to have to do the timing belt, water pump, pulleys, and idler as soon as you buy it. Negotiate that into the price.
Will an OEM cap fit in that radiator? The seller said that the previous owner did the timing belt and water pump. We already agreed upon $8700, I just wanted to see what everyone thinks.
The guy just said the previous owner had it done at the 60k service which I was kind of confused about. But no it is not tuned, but there is a tuning shop near me where I would get a stage 2 tune, my buddy has a bugeye and got it tuned there and I think they charge around $200 for an open source tune.
To do a timing belt at 60k is seems crazy. Unless he's got receipts, I'd plan on doing all that's been mentioned by 'brfatal' cause it prob wasn't really done.
And he told you it's not running any type of tune? Cause with those mods in there and no tune = BIG problem. Running lean makes the engine run hot. This tends to lead to 'pinging/knocking', or preignition. This causes greatly increased cylinder pressures and heat, which can hammer bearings, crack piston rings/ring lands, burn pistons and valves, and that's just the engine lol!
Too much on this one says stay away IMO man. I know you want a Rex, and I'm sure they're not all too common in TX, but I'd try and find something stock for sure!

Why would it run lean? Why would no tune explode his motor?
The only red flags I see are the cheapo radiator and the early timing belt job. The only mod the tune would be needed for is the SPT intake, but I highly doubt that's going to take his motor out.
I heard that no real damage can be done with an spt intake, as opposed to a cheap CAI. As far as the timing belt and water pump, I am enrolled in an auto tech program at school and will be able to replace those next year.
You SHOULD get it tuned.... But don't NEED one... but I've never understood why anyone would run all that w/o one. You are shitting $ away and not getting the best bang for your buck.
I'll be sticking with 3G reference questions from now on, cause I would've never thought you could get away with that! I'd def still get it tuned though as mentioned by Paul cause you're not getting the full potential of your mods without one.
While we're on the topic. Why is it that the bugeyes can get away with all that with absolutely no ECU modding? Does it 'adapt' to the changes or what? Seems strange to me that you can change that much and not lean out...
Seems like things change with Subarus every 2 seconds! Genuinely curious to why only those few years/models don't need tunes though. Just good info to know so I don't look like an a$$ next time lol! I try to help with as much as possible, but like mentioned it seems as soon as you learn something about a particular subject it gets flipped upside down. Damn Subarus....
Just keep in mind OP that there's gonna be a good amount of maintenance needed like mentioned...even if the timing belt WAS changed. It looks very clean in the pics though! Any body damage or rust? On KBB it's at $8500 in "fair" condition. With the maintenance it's gonna need to keep it a happy Subi I'd get him under $8k personally. He'll do it...
I'll jump in on this... T-belt- spark plugs - water pump - timing belt tensioner - all the pullys the timing belt rides on. Diff service to be sure it's done . Change out all the fluids in the whole car if possible. Maybe a alignment make sure tires will wear evenly . While doing the water pump you'll wanna clean out all the old coolant and replace with new coolant. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things but that's what i can remember now.
+1 to the above as its exactly what I had here before he beat me to it lol! I didn't have the alignment down though although its a good idea along with a balance of the tires and rotation if needed.
Haha beat you to it... I did the alignment only because we have one at our shop and it only took 15 minutes. Keep up with maintaince and don't beat the shit out of it and it'll be fine. . Enjoy your new ride I've only had mine for 6 months and have loved every minute if it.
I just meant model/model and year/year. I'd think things like tuning would be pretty continuous and standard throughout. Good info to know though thanks.
