No Intake? No Turbo Timer?

Todays my bday. So my friends show up with an AEM Cold Air Intake for my new WRX.

I've read several things here and elsewhere than this is not a recomended mod.
I've also read that turbo timers are not really needed for the WRX.

Should I just keep the Intake?
I can exchange it, but what to get in that price range?

Any help, advice would be great.

Don't bother with the AEM. I had one that I just sold on ebay. Does nothing but makes your car louder(can hear the wooshing and whirring of the air and turbo). I would swap for something else. Depends on what kind of work you want to do, but and up pipe should be in the price range of the AEM. Or maybe replacing the intercooler hoses with something like samco hoses and a K&N drop in filter. Ditching the silencer will help. As for the turbo timer, check this site out. This guy has been inthe business of modifying Subys for a very long time now.

I recommend swapping the CAI for something like 'nos' suggested. The turbo timer, I would keep.

Have fun And Happy Belated B-Day.

Hey BlueDeom,
thanks for the bday wishes...

I'm at home sick from work

Oh well.

So you would recomend a turbo timer?
I was thinking of the blitz dual with the built in meter.

Reading that link from nos looks like pretty much keeping the thing stock and doing the BIG upgrades (new wheels which I so plan to do)..

thanks for the help!

No need for a turbo time on a WRX. Get a BOV, if you like the sound, or Samaco hoses, or a Panel Filter.

You'd rather rely on the evaporating coolant to cool your turbo, rather than having your car run a few mins, after you park and leave?

There seems to be two sides to this issue. From what I have read it doesn't hurt... just some people beleive it doesn't help either.
I think the Blitz Dual Timer is my best bet for this. Even if it doesn't help like some say, it does damn look cool!

Well, I have to believe that liquid coolant cools better than vaporized coolant.

It's not vaporized coolant, it boils down to the effects of liquids being heated and flowing up with the heat, cooling towards the top and flowing back down etc. One of the reason why the little resvoir for filling coolant is above the turbo. But I think it's one of those old things from that past that stayed around and people make money on it. If you run your car hard or something, then yeah, idle it a little before you shutting it off won't hurt. By the way, I also have a Blitz turbo timer. Came with the car. Does all the auto timing for shutdown, give voltag reading etc. but I think your money will be better spent on something else. As for the site I gave I have delt with the guy since my first suby a 91 Legacy Turbo. The guy has always been honest and real with me.

I was looking into an alarm with auto start (cold mornings)- some allow you to stop the car at a distance as well - ie. park, get out, and shut off at 100 ft away - extra idle time even if only a few seconds?

Yes sir. Not to mention if one decides to go with one of the BIG boy turbos down the road, which most of them don't have coolant lines, then you HAVE to have a turbo timer.... or at least some patience to sit in the car and let it cool down after a hard run.

you really dont need to sit unless you run HARD. meaning you are almost redline shifting through every gear for hours. unless you are putting that kinda power through your turbo really is not that hot in the sense of turbo heat. so a turbo timer is over kill.

but if you do run it hard, let it sit for about 1 minute or so and youll be good. even then you are still in the ok.driving the car normal, does not mean you need to let it sit before shutting it off as the turbo does not hit that point of heat during that.,

Nice job guys, this thread's from 2003.

Anyways, you don't need to let it run that long. 30-45 seconds is plenty. I let mine go for 30.
