Looking at getting an 08 2.5 that has a Cobb access port & Perrin exhaust only on for 200 miles or so before the turbo ate itself.
Question is, what are the odds it is as simple as a new turbo? It was run 2 or 3 times (trailer loading) and starts right up. I'm worried it may be more of a maintenance rabbit hole if a bunch of metal from the shaft/bearings was circulated through the block. Will it be reliable with a new turbo and a few 500mi oil changes?
Do you know that any debris came off of the turbo? Turbo's can also blow seals and just leak oil and be considered blown. Other than opening up the block I don't know that you can check if debris got into the cylinders.
drain the engine oil and see if there is any metal in it. it will look shiny or have a greyish tint to it. also pull the down pipe and check shaft play and look and see if oil is in the downpipe
Looks like I will get to take a peek this weekend pulling off the turbo. Looking at the shaft play/bearings, oil & downpipe. Anything else to keep my eyes open for while I'm digging in?
So had the dealer check it out after the new turbo got starved within 10 minutes. Metal shavings from the shaft, impeller nut and blades rubbing. Dealer is saying a new engine is the only option for $9k-$11k. Is it possible to clean the shavings out of the system? I was thinking an Amsoil bypass kit and some short oil changes.
The only way you MIGHT get all the shavings out, is a full motor rebuild and youll need all new parts for just about everything the oil touches
