NEWBIE HERE. What Swap is appropriate?

New to the wrx world thinking of buying this 2002 wrx wagon with a bad motor..

What would be the best upgrade for a motor? Putting an sti motor and tranny in ? or a hybrid with sti block ?
or just rebuild a stock motor with better internals?

what is the best option to have more power reliably .

thanks

turboawd,

It really depends on what your looking for, asking whats the BEST anything will get a million answers all based on what is best for each individual.

What are you looking to do with it, Auto-Cross, Rally-Cross, Shows?

To answer your question I would build out an EJ25 because I like stock reliability . I would do any needed body work and repaint it glacier white then I would park it in the garage and pass it down to my kids. when I was real young I always wanted a 5 door Subi and i would love to pass one down one day : )

Just put a factory 2L back in it and be done. Less headaches and to be honest you'll be a lot happy that way.

If you have access to a full STI drive train that's in good condition then go for it!

The 5speed trans has been known to be a weak spot, so if you can upgrade the engine and trans at the same time then I think that's the best option.

Compatibility issues makes an EJ205 replacement a better option, if you're a newbie. If you have professional help, then the sky's the limit!

You can improve the EJ205 in due course if you wish, and make it as powerful as you can afford. But it's well worth it to avoid the aggravation of trying to make it work on your own.
