Just purchased a new subaru wrx sti. Very pleased with my purchase so far except for the rattles. Boy is it a jump from a volkswagen. My whole trunk side liners are rattling making a lot of noise. How do I keep them down and stop the rattles?
I assume the car is in good working order? If you feel alot of vibration when your driving the car you might want to look into the wheel balancing, brakes and possibly struts. If everything is in good working order then there are 3 ways to reduce vibration in a car.
1. Use an insulating material - I prefer recycled denim insulation. It can be purchased from your local hardware store by the roll and it is easy to cut, spray glue and adhere to most body panels on the surface between the trim and the body. It relatively lightweight and by making contact with both parts that are rattling it will reduce the audible vibration.
2. Use a absorbing material - think fat mat or dead mat. Install it between panels that sit very close to other panels. the weight of the absorbing material will absorb some sound waves and you can jump multiple interior plastic pieces to connect them and stop them from vibrating.
3. Use an Adhesive Product - urathane rubber works wonders in very tight spaces where you can identify which part is vibrating and rattling. Use it on trim parts where holding clips are weak and allowing the part to vibrate. remember a little goes a long way, You are better off using a thin film than dealing with drips and runs especially when you have to remove it later.
Hope that helps.
