Talking In the market for an wrx

Hey all im looking to buy a wrx
I just read the thread about buying used wrx but I wanted to ask a question that wasnt really covered.
What do you think is the limit when it comes to buying high mileage cars?

I was searching and i found these two wrx's

http://providence.craigslist.org/ctd/2829948751.html
( i love the blue) its a 03 wrx but it has 185k miles
-- for $5200 do you think its worth the buy?
-- my limit is between 4k and 6k and i know its hard to find these cars cheap
-- if i do buy with the high miles on it, cant motors just be "beefed" up when things start to go wrong? or will there just be more problems than i can handle

and this
2002 wrx
--i know that bearing dont cost more than a couple hundred, but this may be an indication of possible other problems...?
-- and only $3500 for a wrx, must be somthing seriously wrong right?

Also, what are some common problems and things to look for when buying a used wrx?

Thanks for reading,
Steve

I gotta make this short and sweet as I am out the door to work in a second.

look for cars that are not modded, and have had their maintenance done regularly/as needed.

If you look around a laot and wait it out. The very deal your looking for will happen.
I got my car with 100k and some mods, for 5500. but I waited for about a year for it to fall in my lap.

Use all car searches possible very often.

Spun bearings are very expensive to "fix"

You are looking at dropping another engine in it ($1500-5K) depending on used/new/built/etc...

If you have the know how and can stand a little downtime, I'd say the 2002 and lowball him at 3K and then find a used motor to drop in it.

As for the 1st one.... 185K is a ton of miles and will need stuff in the next 10K..... Again, please refer to 1st explanation.

Randy pretty much hit it dead on for what to look for.

I would not touch either with a stick. From experience and observation I would say to shy away from high mileage WRXs. I'm being completely honest when I say that $4-6k is not enough to get a car worth buying unless you get the steal of the century.

well the only thing that im thinking right now is that I want a turbo engine.
I am also looking at a 2000 subaru 2.5 rs with a replaced motor that only has 50k miles on it. it also has upgraded struts and springs. But i ive searched and found out that the 2.5 engine doesnt really handle boost well so the max psi i could get from an rs engine would be 5-6psi.

Do you think I should pay the $5500 for the rs and then in a few years swap in a wrx motor and turbo it that way?

Or should i just keep looking for a lower mileage wrx?

gunk007 is more helpful than not
I am with brfatal. If you really want a WRX, wait unitl you can save up some more cash. Plus the first link is not good anymore.
Antoher thing you should realize is that the sedans tend to be quite expensive to insure. They are rated a "U" from my insurnace company. I belive the wagons are less expensive to insure for some reason. FYI - closer to A is better.
Good Luck

If your just after a turbocharged car, there are many decent ones out there in your price range. They may not be the newest but worth the money IMHO.

Maybe look into getting a 2nd gen eclipse or talon....There are things to look out for on those cars as well being that they are too .....A Car.
If they fulfill your hunger, than you can have a chat here with a few of us on things on those to look out for, such as their famous transmission issues, the spyders waterfall of a roof system..ect...ect...

Which ever you decide, we will be more than happy to help you with it. Just please take our advice, It will pay off for you in the end.........GL..

My bro had volvo and its ridiculously expensive to mod those cars. Only one worth modding IMO is s60 R. And even with that, still going to be a lot. One bonus, its very familiable for carpool lol
