It's because you're young, and to them look (not saying you are) like an inexperienced driver and/or someone who's not serious about buying the car.
I dealt with it when younger too. Don't take it personal. It's just them trying to protect themselves from a premature clutch job or more.
Just think, if the dealer let every teen and early twenty something test drive that car, 80% probably either grinding/riding the clutch, after a while that takes a toll. On a car that's gonna sit on their lot for a month+ and say 20+ people most likely doing the same thing, would you want that car? Nope...lol!
I walked in and had no problems getting keys before anything down/signed.

I've found that if you present yourself as a "Grown Up" and as a potential buyer that most dealerships are more than willing to let you take one for a spin. If you talk to salesperson first and let them know that your responsible and you've been in the market for a while they are usually more than willing to let you take em for a spin.
Ive only been turned away for a test drive once and that was entirely my fault, i was out with some buddies in high school (we should have been in class) and we stopped by the Mitsubishi dealer to see if we could drive the EVO 8. We weren't buyers and we were high school boys just looking to go fast. The sales guy saw right through us and told us that he didn't have any we could take out.
If you happened across a dealership that wasn't willing take care of you i just wouldn't give them your money, Im not sure what its like in North Carolina but down in southern California I have 8 Subaru dealerships within 50 miles. I had one tell me they wanted $1,500 over list when I picked up my 5 door. When you find your dealership make friends with 2 people, one of the slaesmen and one of the service technicians. In this world its not what you know its who you know. : )
