Hey subaru guys. I took my first test drive in a stock 04 wrx the other day and loved it. They asked 14k. Yesterday i took an 05 sti and i felt like i was in jet. i loved that even more. They are asking 18k with 50k on it. Which is more bang for my buck. please help me
My second thought: buy one that hasn't been modded or shows signs of having been modded. If you need help figuring that out, post some pics and descriptions and we'll try to help. Blow off valves, boost controllers, and cold air intakes are usually bad signs: Unabomber's Manifesto - NASIOC
Third thought: remember, insurance and general upkeep/maintenance are probably going to be more expensive if you get the STi, so be prepared to shell out some bucks when you have to replace the Brembo brake pads/rotors and other items that tend to need replacing. Every 30,000 miles is a semi-major maintenance milestone for either the WRX or STi. That STi is approaching 60K, so check out this link for what will need to be done: Subaru maintenance schedules and new car break-in period
Um... keep looking. I looked for months to find mine, you can get an STi if you wait for the right deal in the high teens neighborhood. Be patient, you'll find one. And get it inspected.

I'm with Manshow and Chase. Take your time and find the one you want. Also, be prepared for higher insurance, 91+ oct gas (it adds up ), and the desire to start dumping money into it. It may not need maintenance but you are going to want to start modding it. Even more so when you read the posts on this site.
Since you guys have experience with these cars can you tell me what some of the biggest problems with these cars are. I work at a GM dealer so i have a lift for any repairs that have to be done but what are some of those repairs
what year was it? 07? I think the turbo's have a life span not much over 100k, and the 07's (STi) had a problem with the #4 piston going due to bad factory tunes (and the oil or fuel routing I believe). The wrx's had weak tranny's (02 and 03 especially)

tloop66 - I have an 04 wrx wagon (IN ARLINGTON "Action" HEIGHTS) that I bought with a 3 year bumper to bumper in Naperville for less than that an entire 1.5 year ago.....
I'd let mine go for WAY less than that....and it has a brand new TURBO AND CLUTCH!
If I were buyign a WRX today.....as mentioned
1) get inspected
2) go with a STI as mentioned.
3) confirm service RECORDS! that 60K one is NOT CHEAP!
I came from a 350z to a WRX......and I'll be honest - you can find a decent Z for about the same price as wrx and cheaper than a STI. I dumped my 2004 Grand Touring Z sight unseen to a girl in Iowa for 17K last year in December, mint with 52K miles on it.
The only reason I bring that up is
1) Winter months = great time to buy rear wheel drive sports cars if you can...
2) my Stage 1 Wrx isn't even in the ballpark as my Z. 0-40...great the WRX can win with a clutch dump which I will never do. After that you can forget about it. And yes, from a roll on the highway a Z will beat a STI. A regular WRX isn't even a race, trust me.
What I'm saying is a WRX with 60k will need a new clutch......and a new timing belt at the 60K maintenance. It also might need some more.... That's at least $1,500 in total. Also there are some other damn fine cars out there around the 14K range.....

Where in that do you see that you need a new clutch and a timing belt at 60K? You're so out in left field it isn't even funny. You might need new fan belts, but the timing belt isn't until 109K miles.
Unrelated to that, a near stock 2.0 wrx will not keep up with a 350z. That's a no brainer. The 2.0 can't tq like a v6. Stock for Stock....the STI will be a close match. The 350 just has gearing more suitable for highways. Who cares, its not what this car was designed for. Its not built for straight line speed or rolling highway drags. If your that worried about that. Upgrade!! And hold onto your wallet or go another direction car wise.
