I will be in the market in the near future for a used car. I can spend 15K and I like the WRX but will need to use the car 60 miles a day for work. I have a friend who had an '02 and the turbo quit after 65,000 miles, is that a common thing or was his a freak accident? I don't plan on modding the car beyond bolt-ons or beating the piss out of it. I'm not a heavy foot driver, but I do like to have fun from time to time and may, just may, take it to the strip on some seldom occasions. Is the WRX good for what I need?
Turbo's just don't quit after 65K miles. It may have been driven hard and not tken care of. I would say, yes, it is an excellent car for what you are looking for. 06-07 is my choice, but to each their own.
I would go with the 02-03 years then if you cant afford the newer cars, the only problem with them is if you buy a modified one, it will probably brake down more often, I would suggest looking for a stock car that way you know it hasnt been hot rodded to hell and back.
Yeah, I actually like the front end and headlights on them better than the newer ones. And I wouldn't get one that has work done to it. That seems to me like starting a relationship with a pregnant chick. Nothing good comes out of it.
go with 04-05, you can get them between $15,000- $20,000 with low miles on it and still have a powertrain warranty that covers the turbo up to 5 year or 50,000 miles. That would be my suggestion.
Personally, i love my wrx but if i knew what a bitch it is to do even the smallest mod i would have deff. reconsidered and bought an srt4. Love the way it drives and handles, love the awd, but im tired of the whole mod issues. Do an exhaust.. no gain w/o a tune, bov.. the car runs like shit until you tune it. Just some issues that any other car would bennefit from with out a $200 dyno session and a new ecu map. Other than that i love the car!!!!WTF !Thumbs Up
I love my Suby. Even the fact that it's a wagon. I wouldn't have it any other way. I found one that wasn't beat to hell and it runs great. Have never had a problem with stock OR any of the mods for that matter. And re-tuning it's not that hard if you have EM(Access port). First thing you should get. If you can find one that hasn't been beaten up then you'll love it.....i'd bet money on it. And as for the SRT dude.....at the end of the day....you're still driving a neon.:notgood:
i got a stock 02 from a elder woman for 9k, such a steal. go for an 02-03 since theyre the cheapest. youll absolutely love it especialy if its your first turbocharged vehicle. it put a wide smile on my face, and im sure ittl do the same for you
As stated, in performance world you get good and bad only!
if its wwweeeellll ok...... then its on its way to bad.
Scoobs just stay good. Not because I own one (Bugeye) but because every single time
ive jumped into mine turn the key, the world is forgiven.
If they got bad brakes, they still stop.
If the turbo is dead, it still drives.
some folk here can say even if the head gasket popped, it still got them home or to a garage....
Buy one Rage....
here are loads of folks that will help out.
Oh, and if you get the chance ask your friend to park his car up next to another brand
turbo car, and study the engine bay layout. youll soon see how well these car have been put together.
Im new to the Subaru world and just got my first WRX so i can't really say they are very reliable but i have always heard great things about them and thats why i got one. I picked up a 2003 with one owner who took real good care of it so im looking forward to enjoying it for a long time. I would say just make sure it was well taken care of and you will love it! Join the family!!
I got an 07 wrx and i drive mine 60 miles a day for work and i have had no problems, especially in the snow, i rip in the snow, passing everyone in the highway doing like 45 and i be doing 70, Def get one
Thanks guys. Your responses are really making me lean toward buying one.
Here's my next question....Which one is lighter...the sedan or the wagon? And is there a difference in handling between the two?
i drive 60 miles a day in my 263,000 mile 95 legacy sedan. I DARE you to find a neon or some bitchfire with that kind of miles. for one, the motor wouldnt have lasted as long. 2, no one would care about a neon to have it that long..
anyway the wagon and sedan are based on the same driveline, everything interchanges the same. the would probably be a weight difference of within only 200 lbs or so.
the question should not be about handling, but about how much junk you can fit or will load up into your car.
i have an 88 sedan and it hauls around engine cranes and motors for that matter.
i just got my 02 and i am really enjoying it. not my first turbo car but one of the best handling and it rides real smooth. my friend matt works for subaru as a tech and has nothing bad to say about them. actually he's pissed right now because there is nothing to do at the shop...lol!Thumbs Up!Thumbs Up
I am also in the market for a WRX, i found an 2003 wagon with 58k miles for $13500 at the Subaru dealer. Found another 2004 with 22k for $16000 from private seller (slight fender damage). What do you guys think? I know I can spend more and get one with 20-30k miles, but it seems as reliable as these cars are the 30k less miles is not worth the $3k in additional cost. Buy the higher mileage and spend the rest on mods?
i would stay away from anything with over 60,000 miles on it. Your going to have to start replacing hard parts on it (water pump, alt, ect..) Just have some money put away for that. I would offer him 8,000 and see what they say!!! Remember you don't know who had the car before or how they drove it so be careful...
Bring it back from the dead. Hi everyone, i just sold my Lexus sc400 and thinking of buying a 2002 wrx turbo with a rebuilt engine that has 25 miles and some mods (private seller). Or 2006 sti for 17 grand that has 96 miles(dealer). Or settle for swap sr20 240. I just want to know are they easy to work on? Can I do basic maintenance with out pulling the engine? I don't know anything about Subaru's And it looks complicated. Any input would help to make decision thank you
They are different as far as the engine layout goes, and some tasks are a little more tricky than others (i.e sparkplugs). But with basic knowledge and tools most work can be handled by ones self or a good friend at your side with a beer.
Okay as for basic maintenance. I wouldnt be puling out the engine for a simple sparks plugs? Also there's a Subaru wrx turbo for 10 grand with a rebuilt engine. Do you thinks it's worth it for that price? Sorry for newb questions here but I'm out of my element here. Thank you for your input
