I know they say not to go to hard on a wrx unless you have a warrenty on your tranny.. so how hard is to hard? i know not to redline it or anything but what about simple speed shifting and whatnot? or should i just drive like grandma sally everywhere i go?
I go to redline sometimes, you just have to be smart about it. Let the clutch burn just a tad long to lighten the shockload. And of course, don't dump at all.
you could drive around bouncing the thing off the rev limiter all day. its not the high rpms that destroy the transmissions its smashing the power into it between gears and on launches.
Just like everyone said you can get it to the rev limiter and shift fine, no harm to your tranny. But your engine on the other hand. You just have to remember that that car is AWD, that the wheels really arent going to break lose to relieve any stress from the tranny.

"Stage 2, not so cool anymore, starting to get bored now."
I have drag raced mine for a year and a half and i am running a 8.02 in the 1/8 with the stock turbo and i never power shift it or anything but i do launch it pretty hard, i would rather slip my cltuch and replace clutches all day long before i replace my tranny gears. lol
im still not sure if im driving it safely or not. I keep it low on rpms, and i guess i just shift pretty quick , maybe i am dropping the clutch i dont even know. would i know it? would the car do something like jerk or something?
When they say "drop the clutch" they mean at a stand still, bringing the rpms up to 5500 and side stepping it without gradually letting off, you're engaging your gears in tranny instantly and forcing the torque of the motor to the gears in the tranny. Like above mentioned, AWD cars aren't forgiving because your tires will bite, at the expense of the tranny gears. You can drop it between gears while moving but it wont be as hard on the gears because the drive train is already in motion.

if your causing damage to the trans during the shifting process you would feel it. it would feel like the the power is slapping the transmission and will cause a jerky ride. don't force the gear shift between gears. you would be surprised how little the actual speed of your shift effects the overall acceleration of the car. the fact that the wheels are without power for a second or two sounds like a big deal, until you factor in the inertia 2500lbs has doing 45mph.
