Found this cute wry wagon for sale in my area. I spoke to the guy and he said he'd take $4.5k for it. Needs a little bit of work, but it looks like he knows what he was doing when he modded it. 170,000 miles. Ive heard a lot of conflicting things about how reliable subies are in terms of transmission longevity. Any ideas/ words of advice? This link here is the one I'm talking about. 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX
Id swap the springs for a brand more suited for our cars, but other than that it looks more than worth it.
That's cheap, and 170k is just broken in with a Subaru.
Good luck
Doesn't look like it's been "babied". When was the radiator replaced? (It was?...with an OEM one?!) When was the turbo replaced? That looks like more than "minor damage" to the rear (even though it is hard to tell with the poor quality picture). What else has he "never got around to" doing? Changing out those springs (or not), you will need to think about new struts too.
I predict this car will cost you at least an extra $3000 before the one year anniversary of your purchase (if you try to fix/replace everything that needs to be fixed/replaced).
Of course I may be mistaken. However, the bottom line is that it would be to your benefit to ask as many (intelligent) questions as you can to this seller's face and see what kind of answers and reactions he gives. Always be prepared to walk away (and communicate that fact if need be).
A td04 IF it goes out=$150
New radiator IF it cracks=$300ish
Springs=$200 max
Body damage=who cares?
The car is almost 11 years old so its not going to be perfect. I would change timing belt and all fluids if you got it just to be safe. I still say its a decent deal. Especially for something to get you around effortlessly this winter. 4,000 would be a even better deal if he would take it. You could return it to stock if your not into performance and recoup some of your money by selling the aftermarket parts.
Certainly a good and relevant counter to my assertion. It all depends on what one wants to do with the car. My mindset is to replace with "better than OEM" parts; an aluminum radiator, slightly upgraded/updated turbo, performance strut assemblies, etc. I suppose what touched my nerve is the claim the the car has been "babied"...
Bottom line in my opinion is to ask questions in person and not use up all of one's cash solely on the purchase. Some reserve cash needs to be set aside for undisclosed problems. I hope the OP pursues this opportunity and it turns out to be a positive experience (sale or no sale).
